When I first bought The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (March 4, 2008), I had no problem playing it. Now, it will not play at all in my LG BP220 and has very bad video and audio in my Panasonic DMP-BD605. In the Panasonic, it often has intermittent pixelization and some sound dropouts. When I held it up to the sun, I noticed many pinpoints of light. I am reminded of "Laser rot" on Laserdiscs, in which the vapor deposited aluminum oxidized. I own over 500 Blu-rays and this is the first time that one has failed to play. I also have over 1,900 DVD titles and only 2 will not play any more (The Spy Who Loved Me and Devil's Advocate). I also experienced this once on a CD (Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd) when the UV cured lacquer became sticky and when I held it up to the sun, I could see some pinpoints of light probably caused by oxidation of the Vapor Deposited Aluminum (VDA). I strongly suspect that the lacquer wasn't properly cured.
By the way, one cannot check Laserdiscs or DVDs by holding them up to the sun because two plastic discs with VDA are glued together. |
