Default Meijer offers only Blu-ray on Web site

Meijer offers only Blu-ray on Web site

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6491629.html

Quote:
For now, Blu-ray Disc has an edge at regional mass merchant Meijer, which began offering Blu-ray titles exclusively on its Web site in mid-September.

The site offers about 300 Blu-ray titles, which is a full representation of releases that studios have streeted to this point.

Numbering about 180 outlets across Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio, Meijer does offer a limited number of both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in stores.

The Meijer site is selling hardware in both formats, including Toshiba’s HD DVD and Samsung Blu-ray set-top players.

Meijer director of e-commerce marketing Dawn Bronkema said there are plans to also carry HD DVD titles on the site, but current in-store sales trends pushed the retailer to act first on expanding its Blu-ray selection.

“Blu-ray is currently outselling HD DVD with a ratio of four-to-one,” Bronkema said.
Another joins the Blu-ray fold.

...and the dominoes just keep falling and falling. That's great, 4 to 1 sales ratio, we need that everywhere in the US!

And there will be those HD-DVD supporters who will say this is a regional chain with minimum sales. Really sad...

If I was the decision maker at a studio, wouldn't I want to ensure that my products were going to be on sale everywhere?

By the way, when was the last announcement that a retailer or e-tailer was going HD-DVD exclusive?

My local Meijer doesn't have much in the Blu category, but it's nice to see they're not bothering with HD.

my meijer had a BOGO on disney flicks last week. Finally found their section. Only like three HDDVD titles and the rest were blu. whole section was mixed, so there was no HD spot or Blu spot. Just 99% blu.

BTW I used to work for them and they are usually behind the trend so it is nice they are doing something right for once. Because generally this store sucks.

No retailer or e-tailer will stock HD DVD only with Blu-Ray's sales advantage. Toshiba tried to change that by trying to bribe Wal-Mart, but Walmart said no.

Meijer offers only Blu-ray on Web site

Sells hardware for both formats online; titles from both in stores

I'm not gonna even try to spin this one way or another...

Meijer *SUCKS* for buying movies of *ANY* kind. Their prices are obsurd.

Both the blu and hd dvd are full MSRP at these stores.

No, their prices aren't bargains. But scrolling through their online catalog it's obvious they're not charging MSRP for everything, and the selection is pretty comprehensive.

B&M stores tend to do that unless they're walmart or something. mall stores are notorious for that.

Yeah, there's been plenty of times I wanted to buy something there and all of the BD's and HD's were at full MSRP. I mean come on. $34.99 for Blades of Glory? Hell, I wouldn't pay $3.49 for that movie... The SD Version of transformers was a full $8 more than wal-mart down the street.

Definitely good news for blu though. I do have to question though. Why in-store sales would have any effect of online though?? Seems odd that it would be this way around and not the other.

I don't see what's odd. For Meijer, BDs are outselling HD-DVDs by a 4:1 margin. B&M locations that move HD-DVD will continue to stock them as long as they sell, but HD-DVD is not moving enough volume for Meijer to find it worthwhile to offer them online.

And, um...yeah, Wal-Mart can pretty much undercut anyone; Meijer is hardly unique in that regard.

By 1st and 2nd Q next year I fully expect Blu-ray to have a healthy consistant 3:1 margin.

I am sighting the addition of the 40Gb Ps3 and all the additional BDP's to hit the market. As well as the BDA's marketing effort. The numbers are def in our favor in both end cap space and retail shelf space.

No kidding. As some have mentioned that rattling sound of dominoes in favor of Blu-ray can't be ignored.
