China The Horse Thief (WCL Exclusive Limited Edition)

Diskino will release Tian Zhuangzhuang's The Horse Thief on blu-ray as part of WCL collection in early 2019.

The film is sourced from the gorgeous restoration done by Xi'an Film Studio (not that ridiculous 48fps 4K "restoration" from China Film Archive) and will feature the original long-thought-lost Tibetan track in LPCM Mono (the Mandarin LPCM Mono track is also included.)

Extras:
The Movie for the Next Century: Tony Rayns on The Horse Thief - A 41-minute all new interview produced by Diskino
UK Television introduction to Daoma Zei by Tony Rayns (1988) - An archival introduction from Tony Rayns

UPDATE! This set is coming next February, cover art and extras revealed!

PS: This set will feature two English subtitles, one for the original Tibetan track, one for the Mandarin track.

The packaging looks beautiful. I hope that the same is the case when it comes to picture quality, because the previous best looking transfer of this magnificent movie looked like crap.

I'm happy to get this one: not otherwise available and a look into a culture that we don't see.

Just bought this. Seems to be selling very well on Taobao considering if won't be released for another three months.

The group buy at media psychos seems to be doing very well, too - and is closing soon.

For those who don't know about the film, Martin Scorsese chose it as one of his '10 best films of the 1990s'

Yes it is his number 1 even though it was released in 1986.

I am really hoping this does well as it will persuade them to release more Chinese classic films on Blu-ray.

I already have Red Sorghum, and am looking forward to this.

Diskino already have 8 Chinese/Hong Kong titles in their MLIFE brand. They'll definitely release more in both WCL and MLIFE as they sell so well.

Yep, same here. Looks like it'll be the same price as "Red Sorghum." Not ideal (my wallet hates me right now) but at least it should be a beautiful set.

As for the disc itself, I did spot check it today. (I have my ways. ) It's a smidge rough around the corners but, all in all, it looks and sounds fine. The Tibetan track can be a bit shrill on rare occasions but it's fine overall, especially considering that it was thought to be lost (IIRC). The video isn't always as sharp as I'd like but it's a 30+ year old film that was probably shot on secondhand equipment. As-is, it looks fine. Maybe a smidge heavy on the grain but I'll take that over DNR any day of the week. As long as you go in with reasonable expectations, I think you'll be happy. Unless the film somehow got cut, those old DVDs can probably go in the trash.

Interestingly enough, there are separate sub sets for the Tibetan and Mandarin tracks. Haven't compared the two but I wonder if there are any significant differences.

Spot checked the extras. The new interview seemed very informative. The old UK intro was a little rough (VHS-sourced) but was quite watchable and listenable. Hats off to Diskino for continuing to put out beautiful sets.

(That said, I still wouldn't complain if they repressed in plain old cases so that people don't have to shell out US$60-70....)
