A new IMAX film challenges everyone to think differently about adjectives like “fastest,” “strongest,” and “tallest,” while inspiring a new generation to think about alternative career paths.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World celebrates the human ingenuity behind technological marvels large and small and shows how engineers push the limits of innovation in unexpected and amazing ways. From the Great Wall of China and the Acropolis to space exploration, Dream Big is packed with epic moments of engineering grandeur. Audiences will be thrilled by the dizzying views of cloud-tickling skyscrapers to white-knuckle trips rocketing alongside experimental vehicles.

Looks promising. The underwater 3D should be something. I like the subject matter too, about how humans have been able to build and advance over the years.

No big deal, but it'll be interesting to see how the good amount of far distant scenery in the trailer and possibly the movie will translate to 3D. As long as they vary it up with medium to close camera shots, that would allow for stronger 3D, with distant scenery usually being naturally milder.

I didn't see it, but heard that the 3D documentary about the view from a duck's flight had a lot of naturally mild 3D due to the height of their flight.

Nice! Most theaters near me have started phasing out 3D so I doubt that I'll get to see it. I hope they they will release it to 3D Blu-ray!

Unfortunately, I don't think the one theatre it's playing at in my city (the Ontario Science Centre's Omnimax) is 3-D capable, so I'll have to hope they release it on 3-D Blu-Ray.

Sounds like another potential release for Shout Factory in their line of UHD/3D/BD combos, of which there are currently four.

Pretty sure I saw this in store last week at BB with National Parks Adventure (which is the one I did pick up). So I think BB got an exclusive two week window on this- maybe in store only though.

I've seen both titles at a couple of the Best Buy stores near me in the San Francisco area. They were also featured in the store's weekly ad.

Here are a few reviews Of Dream Big:

I watched a bit of Dream Big and found it to be interesting as far as content. The 3D is better than the National Parks disc. The first scene in outer-space has a pop-out, hopefully, there are more. Picture quality is bright and very colorful also.

First scene is definitely the highlight. It switches between mild to medium thereafter. Like National Parks, the wider landscape shots tend to benefit less. I bought these for the HDR as well using gift cards, so the efficacy of 3D didn't play as heavy in my buying decision as a pure 3D release might.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback. Might give these a shot anyway when the prices go down. But won't be high on my list.

The 4K disc will be region free but can anyone confirm that the same is true of the 3D disc, or is it region locked?

Same goes for the National parks disc...

Both Dream Big: Engineering Our World Blu-ray 3D disc and National Parks Adventure Blu-ray 3D have no-region-coding. i.e. Both 3D titles are region free.

Both these titles have a number of pushed-in 2D shots. National Parks has more of them than this one.

After a second viewing, I agree. The opening scenes except for one are quite mild and 2D looking. It's only during the last 18 (or so) minutes of the movie that you get some scenes with nice depth. I counted 5 pop-outs with 4 coming toward the end when some students are building and testing their underwater robot.

Here is an interesting reply I received from the MacGillivray company. I asked them a couple of questions about how they do their 3D:

Hi, I’m not a cinematographer but I can share with you some concepts of 3D for the IMAX screen and then converting that to the smaller screen. Unfortunately creating films for the IMAX screen and for home viewing can be very different. Sometimes we can adjust convergence for the small screen sometimes we can’t. Typically decisions are made to make the 3D less aggressive to not cause eyestrain. The same home video version are typically made or TV and for TV the broadcasters definitely want you to sit as long as possible as comfortable as possible to not change the channel. So, broadcasters and cable companies are mostly pushing us toward less aggressive 3D.

For the IMAX wide shots and aerial photography there isn’t a lot of 3D convergence in most aerial shots as items are large and often far away. In 3D photography they call this parallel convergence. Because there is little gained in 3D on the aerials and wide shots, aerials are often shot in IMAX 15/70 in 2D, the thought is to give you as much resolution as possible. IMAX 15/70 has the equivalent of 16K and we scan the original negative at 8K. We typically do some 3D convergence work if there is anything in the foreground that will give the viewer a 3D effect. If it’s just a mountain 5 miles off with nothing in the foreground you might only get a slight offset and crop on the 2D image to get a little 3D effect. Yes, the character shots do have 3D as there is more of a foreground, middle and background to really see 3D. In terms of making things pop off the screen, we’ve done it on some films… we don’t have a policy against it but we try not to overdo it also. Off the top of my head, Dream Big has some moments where they’re building Stinky the Robert that have a few things jumping off the screen.

I hope you enjoy the film in both 2D and 3D, many distributors are leaving out 3D on their Blu-rays as it’s expensive to reconfigure this work for home video and if it’s not ideal, some think it’s best to just leave out 3D. I think we’re on the fence about putting future home video titles out in 3D.

Just watched this. It is not boring but I do not see this one having much rewatch value. The 4K is detailed but I purchased primarily for the 3D. Outside of some CG effects between filmed segments (graphics) the only 3D I noticed were seconds of an aerial shot of a skyscraper AND the in-class experiments (quite a bit of time). I would have preferred the 3D footage being the exterior footage rather than student projects. I probably should have read more about this one, as I was thinking it would be solely a visual display of civil engineering structures (ex. Great Wall segment) with technical information about them, filmed in 3D. That things like this only cover maybe 5 minutes of the feature AND they are not in 3D? Disappointing. Workers walking bridge support beam and standing on top of a skyscraper also would have been nice in 3D but neither appeared to be. Unless all these aerials and on ground footage are in 3D but it is so mild you cannot even tell that they are? The 4K disc also had a visible defect on it so I had to play the feature and every extra to verify it all worked. The disc freezes at one point in one of the extras, so I guess I cannot really sell it as a working 2 disc set. I guess I could donate it to a library but then could this freezes glitch damage a customer's player? Only freezes on and off during one spot in one extra, and the 3D disc is fine.
