Definitely one of Steve Martin's better films. I'd buy it for $10 or less.

Wow this is a surprise announcement! All of Me and Pennies from Heaven are the last 2 Steve Martin titles I need.

Smile Underrated

I was a big fan of this film when it was originally released, and it still holds a place in my underrated movies list. As someone said, it is a little bit of a bait and switch in that the premise seems like it would be a straight comedy, especially with Steve Martin in the lead role. However, while it plays like a satire of Pentecostal-style traveling tent revivals at times, there's a nice message about faith that led me to recommend it to lots of customers over the years.

I ran a movie theater (or theatre, my preferred spelling) from '89 - '07 and owned a small video rental store from '94 - '04, so those years are my sweet spot. Between the two jobs, I saw just about every movie released during that time and this was one that I would recommend when people were looking for something that was a little different or under the radar.

As I'm aging rapidly, I can't remember if the cover shown here was the teaser poster or the actual release poster, but my gut says it's the actual release one sheet.

While I don't agree with UncleJay's overall assessment of the film, he's dead-on about Steve Martin's performance, as it's one of his best. While it does have quite a few great actors, Steve Martin and Debra Winger were clearly the biggest stars at the time and get most of the screen time. Solid acting all around, even in the minor roles.

This movie reminds me a lot of Mumford or Happy, Texas. A kind of dark horse comedy that is never going to be as well-known or as appreciated as maybe it should be.

Did you sell off all your VHS or keep some? Did you keep any cool promotional items?

I sold off most of them and gave others away. I let my employees get first pick of what they wanted then we sold the rest. I kept a few titles that I really loved, like John Woo's The Killer and Hard-Boiled, which weren't readily available at the time.

I had tons of movie posters, tshirts, hats and random giveaway items. Again, my employees got first pick, then my kids hooked up their friends, however, I did keep a couple of things that caught my fancy. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure I still have a skull ring from Billie Zane's movie The Phantom, A "gold" brick from Die Hard 3, a clip board made from circuit boards to promote Independence Day, a Harold and Kumar White Castle hat and some other random stuff.

I loved talking about movies with my employees and customers. Even though streaming is so much easier, I get lost in all the choices and when I do find something I like, it feels almost like fast food. In a couple of days, I couldn't tell you what it was about or even who was in it. I don't know if it's from me getting older or because I don't talk to anyone about them. I guess if I don't debate the good and the bad, it just all fades away.

I fully understand where you are coming from. I watch things on Netflix etc but it is nothing compared to visiting the video shop.

Currently own around 3,000 VHS with a CRT TV set up. Also have a few promotional items myself like an inflatable Croc Dundee crocodile, standee's, posters etc. Do my best to keep the video store memory alive.

Has anyone bought this blu-ray from Paramount, and knows how the video and audio quality is, if it's the same as the Australian version of Umbrella?

I don't have either Aussie or USA disc yet but I would imagine it would look the same since Paramount provided the master to Umbrella Entertainment.

Got to get this one at some point.

Though it's an older master I found the transfer to be pretty good. The audio seemed really low with dialogue to me though. Not sure if it's always been like that.

Do you have the Paramount blu-ray? Do you know if the AR is in the original 1.85:1, or is 1.78:1 like the Umbrella blu-ray?

I tried to buy this one on Amazon and I wasn't paying much attention and accidentally ordered the Australian one deep discount had listed on the site (which is a double mistake since I thought it was Amazon I was buying from and I avoid deep discount for many years now). Since I'd opened it and didn't already have it, I kept it. It's not awesome but I'd have to hear that the paramount is now significantly better to double dip, which I doubt it is. Too bad it wasn't a presents title.

Yeah I have the Paramount. I'm not sure on the AR actually. I've never owned the Umbrella but I would assume it's the same transfer. I didn't notice any black bar visibility on my TV so it's most likely 1.78:1. I could be wrong though.

I have both the Umbrella and Paramount versions, and to my eyes at least, they both appear to be the same transfer. So if you have one, you don't need the other.
