Default Sunshine Glitch (not the PiP problem)

Hey guys,

Just got around to watching Sunshine

I've had it for months, had to buy the Searchlight box to get it, as it was not (and still isn't) readily available in Toronto. The stores here just don't carry it.

Anyways, can you guys watch 1:34:53 to 1:34:55 in slow motion (or go frame by frame) and tell me if you notice this:

Okay, starting on exactly 1:34:54:00 (frame 00) I go forward 8 frames, and I see a little glitchy block in the top left, which stays (but moves) for the next frame (so it's there for frames 08 and 09), then the image freezes from frames 10 to 16.

Definitely seems to be a problem with the transfer, but I wonder if there are corrected discs?

EDIT:

It happens again (without the glitchy blocks) from 1:35:39 to 1:35:40

and from 1:35:53 to 1:35:54

and from 1:35:58 to 1:35:59

and from 1:37:38 to 1:37:39

I doubt it's intended as a "freeze frame" effect, they're too sloppy and misplaced to be intentional, and all of the grain freezes as well.

I can't test mine because mine has that PIP glitch but I can't exchange. But before that happened, I watch this movie a few times and didn't notice anything. Maybe it's only on the new PIP-fixed discs?

You could also add a screenshot it could make it easier for others to find. If anybody can confirm your findings this could be another defective print.

The glitchy block isn't the biggest problem

At all of the times I listed, my copy freezes for anywhere from 6-10 frames. It's plainly visible if you're paying any attention at all.

The entire first 90% of the movie plays fine, then in the final 10 minutes or so it happens 5 times in under 4 minutes

Do they always happen at the same frame or time stamp? If yes it could be a defective disc, though not necessarily all disc in distribution, that can only be confirmed if others have the same issue.

Hopefully others will check it for you.

Yes. It's definitely an encoded problem.

I'll try one more bump, then leave this post to fade into obscurity if no one else wants to chime in

Hmm... sounds like you're referring to the freeze frame effects utilized at the end of the film where
[Show spoiler] Capa is falling into the Sun. I believe these effects were intentionally used to convey the Sun's powerful gravitational effect on the smearing of space and time. This ultimately results in that final moment where time ceases to exist and Capa comes face to face with the surface of the Sun. Or at least that's how I understand it.

I checked both my corrected disc and my original disc.

They both have the freezing you described. I'm 99.99% sure it's an intentional artistic effect that I remember from theaters, designed to convey
[Show spoiler]time slowing down as they approach the sun
.

As for the pixely blocks, I noticed them in the upper left corner on both my discs, but only during the first freeze you describe. They were not present during any of the other freeze frames.

I suppose that may be some sort of error, but if so it only lasts for 8 frames, like the pixels on the old TITANIC 2 disc-DVD, and the error would be on the master, so I doubt that will ever get fixed, especially as Fox has already reissued this disc once to fix a far more egregious error.
