Default Help me decide: iPhone 5 or iPod Touch (5th gen)

So, my At&T contract is finally up and after 4 years, I have no intentions on renewing my contract. Typically I would purchase an iPhone for $199 with a 2 year contract and update it to the newest/most current model every 2 years keeping the TAP (Text Accessibility Plan). However, after heavy consideration, I've come to the realization that I can't afford a $50 phone plan or maybe I'm too stubborn to dish out that much - That's $1200+ for 2 years - but I also accept the fact that phones are social burden these days and almost a necessity in order to keep in touch with people.

I've decided to drop my data plan and use my device as a WIFI-only device. I'm just undecided if I want a iPod Touch or an iPhone for this.
The only reason I'm not keen on the Touch is the difference in megapixels in comparison to the iPhone (5MP vs 8MP). Of course, with Instagram or Photoshop, I could easily edit photos so they look far superior either way so really it's no major concern.

I've been reading Apple has plans to release cheaper (possibly plastic) iPhone. I may wait unless someone can sell me on getting the Touch. Id rather pay $300 for a Touch instead of $600+ plus for an unlocked iPhone

Suggestions? Please do not recommend any non-Apple products. After using iPhone exclusively for 4+ years, I don't even know how to turn on a Galaxy or Blackberry, let alone use one.

With no need for cellular network, it sounds like a slam dunk to me! The iPod touch looks nice too:

it's hard to recommend a smartphone when you can't afford the plan that goes with it. and at $50..that's a really cheap plan

but i'd probably cruise craigslist and try to find an iphone. at some point you're going to want a phone again, and the touch isn't going to do it.

that said there are cheaper options. tmobile has a $30 prepaid plan. republic wireless (sprint) has a $20 plan with an older android phone. att even has a gophone plan for $40 with a tiny amount of data/min.

or maybe just get an ipad mini?

Thanks for the replies.
I'm actually leaning toward the iPod Touch

I may wait a few more months in case Apple releases a newer model though.

So what did you end up doing? I used to be an Apple fan and was using a Apple Touch 5th gen device, I loved it, thought it was great and all. Then a friend gave me his old Nexus Google phone, every since then, I rarely ever use the touch as the Nexus/Android is superior in so many ways.

I went with the iPod Touch (5th). Tried it out for a few days but eventually returned it. I'm still using my iPhone at the moment but I'm waiting for the Sept announcement to get the 411 on the upcoming iPhone models. I'm still curious about the 5c.

Get the Google Nexus 4 instead.

I use it as WiFi only w/o data plan. There's free WiFi at so many places these days.

The phone is $299 (8GB) or $349 (16GB), and it's unlocked straight out of the box.

Edit: It's now on sale for $199 and $249!!!

I have an unlimited data plan on the Nexus. It is simply amazing.

Why? What do you need convincing for? Go for the Nexus, unlocked and can be used on any network. I thought I would not like it but a friend gave me the phone and ever since I just won't look back. In fact, now I finally see the ridiculous mark-up that Apple charges people. The iPhone is so limited and restricted compared to some of the competition. IOS7 should address some of this, but still....

From what I've read/viewed online, I'm quite partial to the iPhone 5s but I still refuse to tie myself to another two year contract and despite "$50 is cheap and hard to beat", I personally think paying that much for a phone bill is ludicrous then again purchasing a (unlocked) smart phone for $600+ is equally inane. That's the price of a friggin desktop nowadays. Rambling.

Anyway, I'll likely eventually obtain an 5s and use it with Straight Talk, however, from what I've read online, the $30 plan is not an available option for iPhones? only $45+ plans or maybe I need a T-Mobile compatible SIM card. I'm clueless about this stuff. Using the same service (ATT) with the exact data plan for 4 consecutive years has seriously kept me out-of-loop about so much.
