Default Older Receivers vs. HDMI

oK I have a jvc 675 watt surround sound system. (5.1) It doesn't have an HDMI input only optical. Is there a big difference in sound between the optical and the hdmi?? Thanks

yes, as long as you've got the speakers to hear the difference. you won't hear a difference between DD and PCM if you don't have quality speakers.

I found HMDI significantly worse than coax or optical when playing CDs. I think other people have found the same thing.

When playing BDs though, the HDMI input was much better. You can't argue with more bits and lossless or no compression. Speakers don't hide these differences in my experience - they add colouration rather than mask detail. Mine are about 15 years old.
