Default Fahrenheit 451 (Truffaut, 1966)

It's curious to note, this far into the Blu-ray era, that there is no domestic Blu-ray of Truffaut's 1966 film of "Fahrenheit 451".

There is a Masterpieces of Cinema release but video quality and special features are notably lacking.

This website lists a Universal pre-order placeholder page but no confirmation of an imminent release.

I would hope Universal, or Criterion, would make a fresh scan of the original camera negative. Give us the fine film grain and restore the color.

Although the film was originally released in mono, the sound stage could be opened by using stereo recordings of Bernard Herrmann's film score.

Porting over the excellent special features from the Universal DVD would be very appreciated. New extras would most welcomed.

Here's hoping sooner than later!

I remember reading this book in high school and watching the film shortly after. Both were great experiences. I'd love this film on blu.

[QUOTE=lilboyblu;10331680]Damn. You just got a lot of people's hopes up.

Sigh. I've been searching through forum posts looking for information about a possible release. People keep looking for it -- I keep looking for it. Forum posts are scattered all over the place. I thought by starting a specific thread for the film, it would establish a place where fans and hopefuls could post their thoughts. Maybe the thread could be a catalyst to some company -- Universal or Criterion -- to recognize there is an audience out there that would buy it if it gets a proper release. New hi-res scan, restored color, special features, good packaging.

Blu-ray is the format I've waited for since I first saw this film back in 1966 -- way before the dawn of VHS. The first DVD was marginally acceptable. The second was great. We're well into the BD era and edging toward BD-UHD. The first BD release was marginal. There are over a dozen Truffaut films on BD of high quality. "Fahrenheit 451" is a great film and deserves a great release of high quality.

I emailed Criterion -- they do so many things just right -- and told them it would make a great addition to their catalog. They wrote back saying thanks for the suggestion. Maybe if others wrote to them it would help.

That being said, Universal could pull out all the stops and come out with a terrific release. But that hasn't happened.

I have great hopes it happens soon.

FWIW this is in 1080p/HDX on Vudu, probably comparable to the Koch Blu-ray (and surely derived from the same master). I figured it was worth the $2.50 to convert it from my DVD.

I too, would love a criterion release of this classic. A film that deserved better than the present releases.

This needs to be in the wish list threads because it also got my hopes up only to be a disappointing read.

Is the Koch the only transfer available on Blu-Ray disc?

This thread got moved to the wishlist in 2015 and seems to have been lost in the Bermuda Triangle there, the film got a domestic BD in 2017.

However it appears to be the same transfer as the German Koch disc.
