Default PSY (Gangnam Style) bound to become a millionaire thanks to Youtube

http://music.yahoo.com/news/cashing-...--finance.html

Quote:
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — As "Gangnam Style" gallops toward 1 billion views on YouTube, the first Asian pop artist to capture a massive global audience has gotten richer click by click. So too has his agent and his grandmother. But the money from music sales isn't flowing in from the rapper's homeland South Korea or elsewhere in Asia.
With one song, 34-year-old Park Jae-sang — better known as PSY — is set to become a millionaire from YouTube ads and iTunes downloads, underlining a shift in how money is being made in the music business. An even bigger dollop of cash will come from TV commercials.
From just those sources, PSY and his camp will rake in at least $7.9 million this year, according to an analysis by The Associated Press of publicly available information and industry estimates. But for online music sales in South Korea, he'll earn less than $60,000.
Oh man ...

Well, at least it's good to know that artists can benefit from Youtube copies/ parodies without having to crack down on users (if the artist opts for the shared revenue instead of the banhammer that is)

Good for him! I had his first album Psycho World back in 2001, wasn't my favorite, but it was fun. It's good to see him enjoying some international success after years in the business.

If the story had broken earlier, there's no doubt that the video's popularity on YouTube would have been impacted, but as it stands, for better or worse, he's already earned his keep this year (from ad-generated revenue, downloads and endorsement deals), which is well into the millions. Even if he disappeared from the entertainment scene, he should have enough from this year to live comfortably.

There's quite a few to choose from this year, for any number of reasons. On the one hand, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" was the most parodied (and on my list for the most overrated), but more than anything, I'm still scratching my head over the popularity of Maroon 5's "One More Night". I like the band and their past singles, but there's nothing remarkable about its composition or the lyrics (the video was at least watchable, I'll give them that), and I've never heard it on the airwaves from Top 40 radio stations while it was at #1; for me, it was the worst song to attain #1 status this year.

Different strokes for different folks.

I actually like Carly Rae Jepsen. I know Call Me Maybe can be considered overrated because during the summer, radio was constantly playing that song. I own her album and it's actually pretty good. I don't particularly like Maroon 5, but I can tolerate them. PSY is just really annoying to me. I don't like the song at all and the dance is really dumb. Yeah, let's dance around on stage like a horse, wave our arms and act like a complete jackass!

Catchy song and entertaining video. But this makes me scared how much we have made people for songs like Friday that went viral from being so bad

There aren't enough adjectives and superlatives in the dictionary to express how much I despise that "Friday" song, and the YouTube vidiots that propelled this into the spotlight.
