Well, i'd say ninjas would be the next logical step to stop people from using their cell phones in theaters. That's awesome!!! Let's hope the idea spreads.

So someone disrupts the screening with their phone ringing... and ushers dressed in skin-tight lycra ninja costumes clamber along the rows to harrass them? That's supposed to minimise the distraction?

Anyway I don't understand the focus on mobile phones. Talking is the single biggest problem in my experience, closely followed by the interminable rustling of bags. Even if a phone goes off, it's usually dealt with quickly.

Agreed. The Prince Charles is a fairly quiky and offbeat cinema so I can understand it working form them, their image and their clientele. But regular cinema goers would be annoyed by the whole thing. You'd also get idiots clapping or whooping the ninjas, trying to get them to come out deliberately or trying to start fights with them. Not all the time of course but we all know there are idiots who would do all of this.

Besides cinemas can't afford to do this. If they could afford it then they'd put a member of staff in each screening as opposed to ninjas - cheaper and less distracting. But the majority can't, they have to make do with staff going in at regular intervals to check the screen. So no, I can't see this catching on.

There's no reason why they can't just have normal ushers whose job it is to sit in the cinema for the duration of the film. That's the way it used to be done. I can't see why there would be any wage implications and I don't know why this practice stopped.

I've even been in screenings that've been disrupted by the ushers talkig outside the main doors!

The talking problem mars at least a third of my cinema visits. I used to go at least 50 times a year, now it's maybe 15-20 times. I hear this over and over but the cinemas don't seem to care. I've often thought it would be great to have earphones for every seat, then te a**holes could talk as loud as they want and munch on their idiot-buckets of crap with impunity.

It's the rise of the multiplex. One or two screens? Affordable. But the cost of having an usher in every screen of multiplexes? Take a ten screen cinema, have an usher in there for every screening at maybe £6.50 an hour. That's £780 a day for the service. You can see why cinemas just have somone pop in every now and again instead.

I'm not saying I wouldn't prefer it but I can see why the typical cinema would prefer not to spend almost £5,500 a week on extra wages for it. Go to a 20-screen or above cinema and you're talking over £10,000.
