Spain Society of the Snow | J.A. Bayona

Quote:
J. A. Bayona, whose credits include The Impossible, The Orphanage, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, has been set to direct Spanish-language disaster movie Society of the Snow for Netflix.

Based on the book La sociedad de la nieve by Pablo Vierci, the film is set in 1972, charting the true story of what happens after an Uruguayan Air Force flight transporting a rugby team to Chile cashes on a glacier in the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash, finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

Bayona has written the screenplay with Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques and Nicolás Casariego. Producers are Belén Atienza (The Orphanage) and Sandra Hermida (The Impossible). Pic will shoot in Sierra Nevada (Andalucía, Spain), in Montevideo (Uruguay) and in various locations in the Andes (both in Chile and Argentina) including El Valle de las Lágrimas, the location where the real incident took place.

Cast will include Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomas Wolf, Diego Ariel Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Rafael Federman, Felipe González Otaño, Agustín Della Corte, Valentino Alonso, Simón Hempe, Fernando Contigiani García, Benjamín Segura, Jerónimo Bosia.[+]

Nice to see Bayona doing a "One for me" after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

I'm a fan of Bayona but I can't see what else this can bring to the table after Alive and the excellent books out there. That trailer could be from the 93 movie if I hadn't seen it recently.

Talented director, but I saw this movie back in 1993.

Well, this will be in Spanish and have a lot of Latinos in the major roles. It was a mostly American English language speaking cast for Alive, so I welcome this one. Also, should look great since Bayona is no stranger to big budget films and adaptations.

It's based on a different book from the one Alive was based on, which was written much later, with input from all 16 survivors. Therefore the focus is less on a small number of lead characters and be more of an ensemble piece, which doesn't just foreground the surviving characters.

Alive is a good film, if never a great one and reviews for this have been promising. I'm looking forward to what Bayona will bring to it, a director a lot less staid than Frank Marshall and whose previous based-on-a-true-story disaster movie The Impossible was gripping stuff.

When Bayona made The Impossible he had to change the Spanish family whose story it was, to an English one so it would get made, but now he's at a level in his career where he can stay authentic in terms on nationality and casting.

Rated R for violent/disturbing material and brief graphic nudity.

Excellent film and while you HAVE seen this film before in Alive it adds enough to justify its existence, each aspect of the story taking its time to tell it right. It makes sure we know the names of those lost and gives more time to the survivors after the rescue. This is the definitive version of the story I would say.

The actual crash is very quick however, the Alive version much longer and more visceral. It seemed Bayona did not want to linger on the crash itself.

Not for everybody.
Some impressive cinematography, good music score, emotionally charged.
I too preferred it overall compared to 'Alive' ... more authentic.
Recommended to people who can stomach it.
It made me go much deeper into this incredible true survival story; I mean that in the most human way possible.

By the way, not surprising it is mentioned in twelve categories @ the Oscars so far.

Superb movie. 1993's Alive has a better crash sequence (and score), but otherwise this is an amazing, emotional experience.

Society of the Snow: The Real-Life Story That Inspired the Dark Oscar Contender

Quote:
To this day, the remaining survivors reunite each year on December 22, the anniversary of their rescue, and maintain a brotherhood of sorts. Some screened Society of the Snow last year and described it as the most realistic depiction of the hell they faced. “I told the director: ‘After people see this film, they will really understand what we went through,’” Parrado told The Guardian. “Even my wife, when the movie finished, she grabbed my arm, she said: ‘****, man. I didn’t know it was so hard.’”

This film works for (and against!) me on every level. And I now have a new film in my top ten suspense films. I was completely on edge when I wasn’t being astonished by something that they were enduring. I didn’t expect this to be anywhere near this great. 5/5

Ukraine Society of the Snow

The only official Oscar nomination I see is for Best International Film / Number 2 spot right now

• Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling? I doubt it. Still, number 5 spot right now; and ahead of Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon and Beau is Afraid and Ferrari.

• Oscar nomination for Best Score? I doubt it. But it sure has some foundation here ... top 10.
