Thumbs up New - Blu-ray vs DVD - Revenue Record

For sales week ending 9/29/2012 Blu-ray's share of the week's package media sales reached a new record of 44% vs 56% for DVD. The previous record was 40% set on October last year when The Lion King and Fast Five led the way. This record is more impressive due to the great number of discs sold for the week. Blu-ray revenue for the week was $88.1 million .

Says BD revenue up 101% from same wk last yr -- I guess due to Avengers + Bond box set.

I wonder how HD digital sell-through compares. I'll bet not very well ...

I would be interested to know this as well. Anyone know what Online Revenue for movies is like? In 2011 I believe the market was at $992 million.

So in 2011:

Digital Downloading - 992 Million
Blu-ray - 2 Billion
DVD - 6.8 Billion

(Please note these numbers have nothing to do with online/kiosk rentals)

I bet these numbers are going to be drastically different this year.

yeah, that is why I find the % market share more important. A week with a BIG title can't compare to a week with nothing interesting.

also since this thre3ad is about new record, it was cool to see that for Avengers BD hit 72% that is nearly 3 BDs for every DVD and the 3D BD sales were almost the same as DVD (i.e. 26% market share for 3D and 28% for DVD)

Thx for the figures ... I really wish they'd distinguish SD from HD in the "Electronic Sell-Thru" category but it seems that info is unavail. (Be interesting to compare sales figs of SD physical (DVD) vs SD DL; and then HD physical (BD) vs HD DL.)

This is very positive news. Clearly the aggressive Avengers 2D and 3D combo pricing was the big difference here. I suspect if we continue to see aggressive pricing from retailers on these combos that the DVD only Sku will eventually go away or become a time release down the road (90 days or so after combo release).

I just wonder how many people who bought the 3D set are actually going to watch the 3D disc. I have a feeling that particular number was helped out by Target's little snafu.

They had advertised both the 2D and 3D combo packs as including a digital copy, when the 2D copy in reality did not come with one, so that's why they priced the 3D pack at $19.99, the same price as the 2D pack.

So between Target's price, people matching it at other stores, and Amazon dropping their price to match it, the 3D pack likely enjoyed extra sales that it wouldn't have otherwise gotten.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it also doesn't really accurately portray people's genuine interest in 3D. When version B of a product includes everything that version A comes with plus more, and both are set for the same price, naturally more people are going to take the one that comes with more since they are getting more for the same money. They may have little to no actual interest in the additional content in some cases, but since it's essentially "free," they'll take it.

Now I'm not saying that nobody has interest in 3D. I'm sure a decent amount of people bought it will actual interest in the 3D version of the film. But I'm also sure that the number was inflated due to the insanely low prices that resulted from one store chain's ad boo-boo.

first I think most people are not like us, they don't know what is happening and scowering forums fro the best deals. Second most people go to a store to buy something. My guess the people that wanted the DVD went in there and just looked at the DVD, the people that wanted the 2D BD probably mostly did the same. Thirdly you talk about "more" but more is in the eye of the beholder. If someone does not see any value in what was included in the 3D package then how is it offering more? I have alrerady bout smaller editions even though they cost the same (combos with DVD/DC) just because I did not see any value in them and it just meant more junk in my house.

Now don't get me wrong, I used to buy 3D copies before I had a 3D display and so I could not see them in 3D, but then again at the time I was paying ore because I saw the extra value in it and I knew I was eventually going to have a 3D display.
