Default A Foreign Affair (1948)

KL announced this just now.

Glad I didn't pick up the German BD when I was considering it last week.

A great Wilder and a bit on the unsung side; hoping this release brings the new audiences it deserves.

Hot damn! I just saw this. Love Wilder and Dietrich, both. Another one I can get off my DVR and onto my shelf.

Criterion, WAC, Kino Lorber are killing it recently.

This one is owned by Universal, along with all pre-1948 (and some 1948) Paramount films.

Sorry,KL but this is without a doubt THE worst BD I own... as expected from Universal, this has not been remastered AT ALL. Moreover, grain (and I do like grain in my BDs) is all over the place, whole reels seem taken from a bad '60s Castle Films 8mm release, quality is TERRIBLE throughout 90% of the movie... I mean, Kino guys, you never released "Witchcraft" (1964) for lack of a decent master (at least that's what you told me back when it was scheduled for release) and you give us THIS?. Scratches, sound drops, dots, white marks, uneven contrast.... THE WORST "HD" (that's a good one) release EVER. If Universal won't fork up for a decent remaster because we all know how cheap they are, and they won't unearth the original elements and let somebody else do it, just refrain from releasing it, or warn the would-be purchasers they're buying something worse than a DVD.
As for DVDBeaver review.... how much did KL pay the guy who wrote it? Or maybe he's in serious need of an eye repair surgery, a la Jane Wyman in "Magnificent Obsession"....
Pleazzzz!!!! Is this 2019?

Agreed. Just watched this and it’s pretty poor. Not unlike watching an old projected film, with the serious scratches and quality variances. An absolutely TERRIFIC film, but so far below today’s Blu-ray remastering standards. A little disappointing from KL.

Hahahaha

Other than the scratches, the disc is very good. Grain is exceptional and finely rendered. DVD Beaver is spot on.

It's okay not to know what constitutes a good transfer. There's of lots of that going around.

Safe to say this is a very good disc with probably the best the film will ever look.

Check it out for yourself, you’ll see. A great film, and grateful to have it on blu in any condition, just wish it had been fixed up a little. Don’t know what that other guy’s agenda is. Drunk criticism.

Except I'm not drunk, I work in the biz and have worked in film restoration. You can't expect everything to look like a video game. It's a very filmic presentation but you are caught up on film damage and scratches, some of which are just going to be there. Look at it correctly and you'll see that it's a fine disc, if you get past the fact that it's an old film and not a digital video game. Grain is beautiful and even the caps show that.

I DO love that someone has to be drunk to appreciate the disc, which tells me everything I need to know about your "opinion." It's sad to see uninformed comments potentially influencing people when they are so off base though.

Well, there's right, then there's uninformed expectations. It's a good disc. It has film damage, but thats' the only drawback. Whoever was complaining about grain doesn't know what gain looks like, and doesn't;t understand that it varies from scene to scene (shot to shot in come cases). Most of the people offering "opinions" have never shot film, cut film, worked in film, so take it with a grain of salt and listen to the professionals (reviewers, industry people, etc).
