I have the same problem. What movie are you playing? It appears that "3:10 to Yuma" has some problems playing on BD PC players. My problem is that I can see the previews and movie title screen on my PC, but I cannot play the movie. The title screen is does not interact. I also get the same error message when I plug in my HDMI. On a side note, my DVD's work via HDMI. ![]() |

Hi,
I have a brand new HP Pavilion HDX9300 (Running Vista 64 bit) and I had the exact same issues. By default the HP notebook will not let you use a HDMI connection and play Blu-Ray on both your notebook monitor and your TV at the same time. (and the answer is no, HP has yet to publicly inform anyone of this in the documentation that comes with your system or in their very own support area on their website.) You have to tell the NVIDA Video card that you are not in Single Monitor mode. This is the solution I used. 1. With your computer off connect your HDMI cable from your computer to your HDTV or your HDMI capable receiver that is hooked up by another HDMI cable to your HDTV. Turn on your TV and/or your receiver. 2. Turn on your computer and when it has fully booted go to the start menu and open the windows Control Panel. Click “Additional Options” and then click open the NVIDA Control Panel. (note: your notebook desktop should be mirrored exactly on your TV when you start up your computer) 3. In the NVIDA control panel there is a “Select a Task” window on the far left hand side. Under the heading of “Display” click on the subheading of “Set up multiple displays” 4. Choose the DUAL Display option. Click apply. But do not close the window right away or open QuickPlay. You will soon get a pop up dialogue box that says you have 15 seconds to confirm your choice. Confirm the choice. Now, if you want, go ahead and close the NVIDA Control Panel and/or your windows Control Panel 5. Go to windows start menu and open QuickPlay 6. Physically, using a right click held down with the curser on the top band of the Quickplay program window (I clicked restore down in the upper right hand corner first, to make it easier) use your touch pad to move the QuickPlay off towards the right of your notebook screen onto the TV screen. (maximize the window once it is fully on your TV screen) 7. While you are in QuickPlay go to the info/more settings area if you have not updated to version 3.7 and click update and go through that process. I have a 5-23-08 build date and my system still came with 3.6 and if you go to HP software and driver downloads they are only offering 3.63. 8. Also, if you have not already done so, within QuickPlay click on the info/more settings and in the Audio Output section click/check mark “SPDIF” so that the software knows you want to send the sound through the HDMI connection. Unless of course you don’t want the sound to go through the HDMI connection. 9. Now, you use QuickPlay just like normal and watch your Blu-Ray disk. I have found you only have to do this once. When you unplug the HDMI the Pavillion Notebook knows it now only has one monitor and when you re-plug in the HDMI it immediately goes back into dual mode. In fact, if you have not used QuickPlay since the last time you were connected to HDMI, it will re-launch automatically on the TV and you won’t even have to move it over to that screen. Cheers, Icplanets |

Having the same problem with HP Pavilion DV9843cl w/HDMI cable. Playing on Sony Bravia 32" LCD. Pressing Function F4 until I only had the image on the TV, the video is working fine. But I have no audio on the TV. Any suggestions for audio? Also, how do I determine what version of QuckPlay HD I have?
Thanks. |

I have a HP notebook to. I will never buy a HP again. I've never been able to record a disc and it freezes up all the time when it go's into sleep mode. I was told there one of the best note books, but I had better luck with my old crappy Emachine.

no wonder you won't be able to record a disc. I have been in succession of a total of 5 HP computers (3 laptops 2 Desktop) and it worked well. |

YOU sir, are a GENIUS! I spent over three hours in chat tonight with HP support. They did not have a clue what the problem was. They were able to clue me in that I needed to update quickplay. While that was downloading and installing, I was using google to search for a solution. I stumbled onto this thread and it WORKED! I especially appreciate the advice about getting the sound to output through the HDMI. After all was said and done, I actually got back online with HP support and sent them a link to this thread and asked that they send the results on to their technical department. Hopefully in the future people having this same problem will be able to get it corrected much quicker. Oh, and one other thing, HP support is an absolute dream to work with compared to the @#$%^&*(*&^%$s over at Dell. I am SO glad I switched brands! Thanks so much for your help and advice. Jonathan |

This is to Icplanets,
I thought your resolution would work, but after trying all your suggestions and moving Quickplay over to my TV screen, I ended up with Quickplay freezing up after the intro part of the DVD. This happened even after just trying to play on my computer screen only. After 2 weeks of talking to 15 different techs, one tech at HP finally downloaded a test 30 day free trial version of PowerDVD 8 on to my computer. This DVD software solved the problem. But...now I have to wait for the Quickplay fix which they tell me they will email me about. Hope it happens before my 30day free trial of Power DVD 8 runs out. If not I have to call HP back and ask them to download another 30 day free trial. In the meantime I appeciate the fix you provided. I assume your Quickplay is OK. By the way, my version is 3.7 nacatk |

I’m glad the post was helpful. After 10 years and 5 computer purchases from Dell I too found their tech support beyond frustrating as well as feeling ripped off after having purchased their most expensive "next day service" warranty that turned into a "six weeks later" warranty. That led to my purchasing my first HP. I will say I wish HP had a comprehensive user forum area similar to Dell. However, that’s where helpful forums like this one here at Blu-ray.com become so valuable to the technical support user community. I’m glad you felt you had a good experience with HP, but the reality is that not being able to play Blu-ray in single monitor mode on both your TV and your computer is among the very first things they should have mentioned to you and they absolutely should have been able to diagnose your issue within 10 minutes. Sadly, HP is far from being alone in struggling with providing competent support. This is why it is such a gift to your fellow man/woman when you take the time to post the details of your tech problem and the corresponding solution, making sure you include as much identifying information as possible so that others can search it out. This forum is really blessed with some great posters who have waged the tech wars and have the battle scars to prove it, and they kindly and freely give of their time to help others so that they can enjoy their tech purchases, rather than curse them. I’m glad you were able to find the answer to your problem. And thank you again for showing your appreciation. Oh, and great job on making HP aware of the solution as well. Cheers, Icplanets |

I found that once Quickplay refused to play a Blu-ray disk, due to fact that I had plugged the HDMI cable from my computer into my HP HDX 9300 laptop without switching the computer into dual monitor mode, I then had to reboot even when I unplugged the HDMI cable and was back on only the laptop monitor. JohnDrakos is absolutely correct that without the reboot the Blu-ray disk will continue to freeze within Quickplay. My system shipped in late May of 2008 with version 3.6 of quick play, even though versions 3.63 and 3.7 had already been available for quite some time. As I was trying to diagnose my problem, I upgraded my Quickplay to version 3.7. (As a side note, if you go to update Quickplay using the automatic link within the program itself, you get a newer version than what you can download on the HP Drivers and Software Update website.) My system is a HP HDX 9300 Notebook with a 20.1 inch WUXGA (1920×1200) and a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS graphics card. Once I figured out the dual monitor issue, I have found the Quickplay software to be fine. Best of luck, Icplanets |

I have a brand new HP x 18 1027CL PC w/NVIDIA GeForce GO 9600 GT (Running Vista 64 bit) and I had the exact same issues that mrjerry posted in May "The content is protected. The content is not allowed to play in the current display mode".
In looking through on the responses icplanets caught my eye so I followed his recommendation with some modifications, but, basically the same steps he wrote about. It got me to the point were I was able to use my TV as the primary monitor, I opened HP MediaSmart started my movie (a Disney movie INVINCIBLE) and it allowed me to go through a process that allowed the movie to play. The first item that came up was to go on line and update the movie and/or TV so that BD Live movies would play. So now I am enjoying Blu-Ray movies via my new HP notebook. Thanks icwplanets for the info. I know this is kind of late in the posting process but, it may help someone who is having the same problem. Have a good day, ewb1228 |

YOU CANNOT PLAY A BD MOVIE WHILE YOUR SYSTEM IS IN DUAL DISPLAY / CLONE / MULTI-DISPLAY MODE!!! HDCP WILL NOT ALLOW IT, HENCE THE MESSAGE. ICPLANETS was close, but not completely on target about the setting changes. The problem and message stems from the fact that HDCP prevents any system using multiple displays to play back BD content - most pirating operations use more than one display, so some genius figured to make it harder for them. Yeah, right.... To get your system to play, first make sure you've updated QuickPlay to the latest version - do it from within QuickPlay, not from the HP site for the HDX or you won't get the latest 3.7 version. Start QP, then click on the Gear icon in the upper right corner, then select "Update". If you're using an HDMI cable, you'll also need to set your Sound Options, and IC was correct about that. 1. Open Sound Options from the Control Panel. 2. Click on the Digital Output Device icon, then click on the "default" button to switch the HDX output to the HDMI cable. Yours might say SPDIF or HDMI - it's the same regardless of the old label. That will redirect your sound to the HDMI and your external display. BTW, the best driver for the HDX 9300 IDT is 6.10.5607.0 - all others seem to either have problems or lower the quality. Make sure your external display is set to detect incoming HDMI signals or you won't get any display on the channel you've selected to send to. In the NVIDIA Control Panel: 1. On the Display option, under Multiple Displays, switch your Display Mode to "Use only one display". 2. On the "Select Display you want to Use", select your external display. 3. On the "Select Display you want Windows to use as Primary", select your external display, NOT "Laptop Display". The Video and Television Color settings will affect the outgoing video signal. Once your desktop is switched to the external display, start QuickPlay and run your BD - you shouldn't have any problem. |

This problem appeared on my HP Pavilion-dv5 as well, eventhough I have played blu-rays before when connected to my TV.
After 2 days of work I managed to resolve the problem. The initial problem was that when I tried to play a blu-ray with HP MediaSmart DVD the screen started flickering whenever I moved the mouse. This is what I did and how I managed to resolve the problem. Try 1: Eventually I reinstalled Windows 7 and downloaded the drivers from the HP website and installed those two, except for the graphics card driver (GeForce 9200M), because I thought I would use the freshest (v306) from the NVidia site. Result 1: NVidia Control Panel says that TV doesn't have HDCP compatibility. Blu-ray plays on laptop, but when connected to TV I get the error message: "The content is protected. The content is not allowed to play in the current display mode." Try 2: Uninstalled driver v306 and installed an older one, v266. (You can find the old drivers on the NVidia.com site. Go to drivers, Download drivers, scroll a bit down and look for 'Beta drivers and Archive'.) Result 2: NVidia Control Panel says that TV has HDCP compatibility, but card is not fully supported. Blu-ray plays both on TV and laptop (separately, not in 'duplicate' mode). BUT the sound doesn't get transferred to the TV. When I open the Playback Devices panel it shows that NVidia High Def Audio in not connected, although it is. Unplugging-replugging doesn't help. Try 3: Uninstalled driver v266 and installed driver from the HP site (sp41696 for my model). Result 3: NVidia Control Panel says both card and TV have HDCP compatibility. Blu-ray plays both on TV and laptop (separately, not in 'duplicate' mode). Sound is transferred to the TV BUT the screen flickers just like initially Try 4 AND resolution: Uninstalled HP driver and installed the oldest NVidia driver I found, version 185.85. Result 4: NVidia Control Panel says both card and TV have HDCP compatibility. Blu-ray plays both on TV and laptop (separately, not in 'duplicate' mode). Sound is transferred to the TV properly. There is no screen flickering any more. Yeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! |
