Just a heads up to the UK members who might not know it. Last Night of the Proms is in 3D tonight for the first time ever. Although, I was getting a bit jaded with this tired and out-dated annual event (with its jingoistic overtones etc), I will definitely tune in tonight just for the 3D. Apparently, the BBC have 3D cameras onstage, right in the middle of the orchestra.
I just hope that the 3D depth is as good as it was for the Olympic Ceremony. Will anyone else be tuning in? BBC HD 9:15 pm (GMT) Gae Last edited by Gae; 09-08-2012 at 04:41 PM. |

Hmmmmm......big disappointment...especially after the success of most of the Olympics in 3D. I watched it for 30 mins in 3D and had seen enough so I went back to watching it in 2D (because then I can surf the net and do other things!!
![]() Overall, the 3D was too conservative and there were no "wow" shots. I was expecting to get some sense of the space and scale of the Albert Hall but I didn't really. At least not much more than I do when watching in 2D. There were a few OK 3D camera set-ups but they were just that...OK. The best being on the Tuba, the woodwind and the camera on the crane, but the other cameras were pretty weak. Of course, there were the obligatory 2D shots too but the worst was that they had some kind of automated 3D conversion setup on the violins...it was horrible. As well as there being little sense of depth with this camera, there were also several objects in the wrong stereo window...e.g. the violin bridge was behind the violin board and part of the person behind the violinist was in front, poking out between the instruments etc. It was very poor. I'd rather just have it in 2D than a visual mess like this. Overall, I'm sad to say, a big disappointment for me. If I go to watch something in 3D, putting on the glasses and giving full attention to the programme, it has to be pretty special and give me the occasional "wow" moments, otherwise what's the point?
