What home theater to buy - Blu-ray Forum

I am looking to buy a good surround system to buy. I have the PS3. I see alot of people talking about Onkyo and wonder if there are other opinions. What watts is my best bet? Im trying to stay around $300-$400. Please help.

Ive been seriously checkin out the onkyo 605, it seems to offer alot for a competitive price. Someone in our family also has a onkyo receiver and they love it.

i just bought this set up, for $450 it is one hell of a deal for 7.1 HDMI receiver plus sub + 7 speakers

get the onkyo. Either the 505 or the 605. It just depends on your budget. I, myself bought the 705 and it is awesome with my tiny Jamo speakers. I bought the amp now but it 1 month i am getting the Klipsch full 7.1 reference in-walls.

Thanks...That Onkyo SR800 looks like a nice set up. I work for Sirius Satelite radio and would really benefit form that Theater.

the 505 doesn not accept hdmi audio. You would need an optical cable for sound.

...the 605 is an excellent system.

nop hdmi inputs. Meaning no lossless audio from the ps3.

youre best bet is getting either:

my set up is in my sig. my room looks like a tornado hit it right now though because I just added a new stand for the tv and had to unplug everything

these speakers sound great though

Has anyone here purchased a receiver from jr.com? Was wondering how quick they get things shipped out and if their a good company to buy from. Never heard of them but their sold out of the onkyo 605

What about vanns.com? they seem to have it for 30$ more with free shipping too.

I have bought a receiver from jr.com (very legit and trustworthy site!) and speakers from Vanns.com (also a trusted site).

Both items came brand new fairly fast and unharmed. I would recommend either, but jr.com is usually cheaper.

The Onkyo SP-908 is available too. It's 7.1 withe Onkyo 605.

I have the Onkyo 805 in my my living room with the KEF 2005.2 speakers. I've been looking to get a 2nd system for upstairs rec room lately and have been watching the Sp-908 and the new Samsung system that is $509 right now from Best buy.

why would he buy a SR605 receiver only for $400 when he could just get the SR800 + 7 speakers + 10"subwoofer for only $50 more. Almost all consumer rating i have read favor the SR800 more. 50 bucks isn't much to dish out and he would benefit alot from it.
PS: the HDMI connection on the SR800 is for video signal only, you'd need optical cable for the audio. That was the only flaw i see from that receiver, the performance is over the top, well worth it.

I'm just saying, it seemed like a very reasonable idea to get the SR800 if he is on a budget plan and not a audio freak, because it would cost alot more for speakers and subwoofer. Is there alot of different from optical to HDMI? i haven't experience HDMI connection, optical does the job for me quite nicely.

The Onkyo 605 is the definite way to go it has 1.3 version of HDMI which plays the video and up to 7.1 channels of audio and has the newer sound formats like Dolby True HD and DTS-HD and some others that led me to buy it for my bedroom receiver so it will be ready to decode these formats when they actually play on Blu-Ray and HD DVD. I have the 805 in the main theater and it is an awesome receiver THX 130 watts HDMI Upconversion. The box actually says two people carry as it weighs over 60 pounds. The 605 has a lot of the same features as the 805 just not THX and not as strong on the transformers and DACs. Go with the 605 it also has the audyssey 2 eq that uses a mic (included) to listen to your room and adjust speaker properties to get the best sound for your environment. You will Love this receiver.

Its all good yellow...to answer your question, yes there is difference between optical and hdmi connection. Lossless audio is bit for bit identical to the studio master, meaning you will hear the exact soundtrack that was intended for listeners withought the lossy compression techniques used in yesterdays dolby digital and dts. Today its Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA and Uncompressed PCM. Optical does not provide HDCP and is why these newer formats cannot work with optical...you need an HDMI or Multichannel Analog connection to hear them.
