Just watched this, and it's fantastic! Best movie from 2016 I've seen so far.
Huge Nicolas Cage fan. Back at the turn of the decade when I really started getting into Nic Cage's films, people were already decrying him as a "paycheck actor", basically since Wicker Man. Well, I thought Wicker Man was enjoyably (and knowingly) kitsch and Cage was great in it, and in 2009 he made two of the best films of his career IMO. So I'll adamantly defend his role choices at that time. Well, then I started watching the films that were coming out in the 2010s – Trespass, Season of the Witch, Seeking Justice, Drive Angry, Stolen, Rage – all mediocre to bad, and I lost a little faith. Well, now I see he's had the starring role in 12 movies since 2014, and none of them score higher than a 5.5 on IMDb. I was a little worried. But I decided to ignore the ratings and watch a couple I was interested in: Dog Eat Dog was great! Flawed, and Willem Dafoe steals the show from Cage, really, but a very good dark comedy. But Army of One is on another level! This is the type of Cage performance I love. Those who like to make fun of Cage's "over-acting" will have a field day with this one, but those of us who understand how truly great and entertaining Cage is when playing over-the-top characters, will certainly enjoy this movie. It's his best performance since Bad Lieutenant. Cage has still got it. It's a movie (based on a true story) where Cage plays a man who thinks he's on a mission from God (played by Russell Brand – who I also love) to capture Osama bin Laden. That tells you all you need to know, really. There's a sort of typical Hollywood tacked-on romantic angle, but it's so weird that it's actually great. The narration and a couple of the straight-comedy scenes might be a bit corny in spots, but it never comes close to ruining the movie. Long story short: Cage fans, don't miss this movie! ![]() Last edited by Grethiwha; 04-03-2017 at 06:30 AM. |
