I see Moonrise Kingdom has almost perfect marks all the way around, except for the extras and the total score is 4.0. Why should a movie get that kind of an overall review when it has a 4.5 score on the actual movie/video and a perfect 5.0 on audio?

I don't understand the appeal of extras personally. I have never watched a "making-of" or listened to an audio commentary. However, I think many members feel they add value and enhance their enjoyment and understanding of a film, so that is probably why they are considered important.

I often feel the score for the extras is too harsh, myself. I don't know how it's calculated, but most times the extras don't get perfect scores unless there are 4 or 5 hours worth of them, which of course isn't reasonable to expect form every film. Even then, there's exceptions... Santa Sangre has 4 hours of (IMO great) extras plus a commentary and only has a 4/5 for extras, which I don't really understand.

And FWIW whoever did the overall average rounded up. The overall would be 3.75 if the extras carried the same weight as everything else. As for whether they should carry equal weight...eh, I dunno. They should definitely be factored in but I don't know how heavily. I'm about the head out to buy the 3D edition of Prometheus even though I have no 3D hardware (or any plans to change that) because I want the supplement disc. Supplements are also a big part of Criterion's appeal. ![]() |

Yeah when I first came to this site I reviewed a few films but left the extras blank as I really don't bother with them so I guess that probably brought the overall score down which in my eyes would be wrong as I may have gave very good scores for the P/Q and A/Q which for me is the most important aspects of the Blu-ray.

I've borrowed movies from the library and when there are two discs, movie + supplements, even though the movie disc is really scratched-up, the supplements disc is relatively unscratched. So, I think we have anecdotal evidence that people don't care about the extras so much.
This lack of interest in the extras has been seen on Criterion movies, too. |

It's a rating based on a "value proposition" which all products are subject to in review or a decision-making process. However, I'm personally not a fan of having it included in the final score. As such, I don't look at the overall score and instead only pay attention to the rating of the movie itself and the AQ/PQ score.

I just don't get how they score the extras. Some movie will come with feature length making-of docs, tons of deleted scenes, multiple commentary tracks and other stuff... just hours of special features, and they'll get like 2-3 stars outta 5.
Then you have movies like The Avengers which has a commentary and then a few fluff promotional featurettes, and it get's a whopping 4 out of 5. It blows my mind. |
