Well, probibly 90% of people here have a PS3, so you know what they will say.
I'm going to give an unbiased opinion based on my xperiance.
I have a sony s300, and my daughter has a PS3 hooked up to the same TV. Now the way the TV is set I would give a slight nod to the S300, but that's not to say that with a few tweaks, it wouldn't make me change my opinion.
If you have an HDMI reciever your all set. If you have optical, both will work, if you have 5.1 analog, the standalone is your only choice.
I like my S300, but when profile 1.1 players are out in abundence, I will probibly get a new one. The PS3 will meet 1.1 with firmware.
So I guess what i'm saying is that the picture is a non-issue, both will need firmware upgrades, the PS3 is faster loading movies, the standalone is a little quieter, but both do their jobs well.
I would score them equal given pro and cons.
