Red face Need a push from you guys to keep collecting!

I recently heard that they're introducing a NEW format and that eventually everything will probably just be on the "cloud". At first I was kind of unphased since most non-tentpole action movies are already at their best on Blu-Ray (I mean seriously, do you need to see romcoms in 8K or even 4K?), but now I am a little discouraged from continuing to build my collection. It's like "Well either I'll have to rebuy a bunch or just get digital copies on the cloud".

On the other hand, I have built up a decent collection and I wanna keep pushing and I was wondering how others are continuing forward.

EDIT: Realized that this may be in the wrong forum but there is no delete option. Apologies!

Honestly, all I ever wanted was a way to watch films in cinema quality in my own home. Now that I have that with Blu-ray I don't see a point to upgrade any further. I am more than happy just collecting blu's and I am not concerned with further advancements. I can already watch movies like Prom Night, Last House on the Left and Maniac in better than cinema quality in my home. What more do I need than that?

Keep buying to your heart's content - physical media isn't going away anytime soon. As for another format taking over, I wouldn't worry about it. The studios have seen fit to stop production of catalog Blu-ray titles and have decided to farm them out to independent labels, who do not have the budget to buy into yet another niche format that they know will only be adopted by deep-pocketed collectors. The only issue to be concerned about really, is space (or lack of). If buying movies on physical media makes you happy, why stop?

For the most part, you can probably buy whatever you want without worrying about UHD disc. At least as far as existing catalog titles, I might think twice about paying full price for new releases, or pre-ordering any newer "4K remasters" on blu-ray - because those very well could be UHD launch titles.

I don't buy new releases anyway, and I"m holding off on a few titles like Goodfellas, Apollo 13, Spartacus, etc. I at least want to see what happens with UHD over the next year or two. But other then that, nothing has really changed for me.

UHD Blu-ray is going to be very expensive for at least its first year. It's never going to be a mass consumer medium in the U.S. - it will probably be more like Laserdisc was. BD has only a 21% physical market share and UHD is going to be a small slice of BD.

So if you're satisfied with BD, keep collecting, especially more esoteric catalog titles that could conceivably go out-of-print. Once you have a UHD player and TV, you may wish to buy some of the great titles in the higher resolution, although wider color gamut is going to play a much bigger role in perceived quality enhancements than the increased resolution.

And you know that many releases are going to be the same BD scan released in a 4K format, just so the studio can say it's "UHD". So there's going to be a lot of scam releases. There's already confusion with the BD releases that say, "Mastered in 4K". Consumers are going to think those are already UHD.

Digital and physical will co-exist for at least five more years, but physical media in the U.S. is certainly in decline. Sales of physical media this year are down about 15%. There's certainly going to be lots of people who never bothered with Blu who will stream UHD titles from Netflix and eventually Amazon and other services. Frankly, it makes sense for movies that you think you only need to see once.

Personally, I only buy BD titles if I think they can stand up to repeated viewing or if they're a "must have" classic (which by definition would stand up to repeated viewing), unless it's a very low cost title (under $10) that makes it a no brainer. For new films that got "meh" reviews, I generally don't see them theatrically or buy the BD -- if I want to see them at all, I stream them, especially if they're not big effects movies.

I suspect that roughly 90% of the titles in my own Blu-ray collection may never see the light of day in the UHD Blu-ray format.

The process of restoring most of these older movies to standard high definition has already been problematic enough, as evidenced by the picture quality debates concerning the Hitchcock films and such, so I'm not anticipating a mad rush for studios to restore them to UHD standards.

There will always be a physical media for movies.

What 60 year old is going to start downloading their favourite movies to their portable device?

Sure downloads will become mainstream, but alongside a physical product.

Just like CDs and iTunes.

And I would say that roughly 90% of my DVD collection will never make it to Blu, so future formats past Blu are of little interest to me. As was posted by someone else earlier, my fondest desire as well was to achieve cinema quality in my home and Blu has done that to my satisfaction. I don't need movies on steroids, i.e. BETTER than cinema quality. The new technology potential is fascinating on some levels, but at some point for me the appeal of NEEDING it has become more elusive. Bring it on, but I'm good, thanks.

Unless you have 100 inches of screen or more, forget 4K. Personally, my Blu-ray collection needs less than 30 movies to complete replacing what I have left on DVD. There are perhaps another 20 more A/B tier movies that I don't even have on DVD that I need to get on that old format which may never make Blu-ray. So......for me and my collection, Blu-ray has been pretty darn good, that is until now. There are too many A/B tier movies that have yet made it. 4K has a very long road/struggle ahead, if it ever takes off at least as a physical format.

For a while I wondered what might happen when Bluray was no longer the in thing, but now I don't really care. Have a Bluray collection in addition to whatever else comes along. If that's digital only, count me out. But at least the blurays will be cheaper.

I guess it's somewhat of a cliche to say that Bluray is good enough for me, but I've noticed the same thing happen to me with gaming too. I have little interest in the PS4 or XBONE and, having never even tried one, not knowing what I'm missing keeps last generation's games fresh for me.

Now I understand how my Grandad feels...

I don't think any of us collect blu-rays solely to watch them.

We love to have a bookcase with the titles stacked on the shelves...its our home decor (where chicks decorate with flowers/candles and sh%t, we do with our collection)

We dont want to be hostage to unknown factors. Example: one day I came home from work Friday 5pm. Internet was down. I called internet company but they couldn't get someone out until Monday. Had I not had a blu-ray collection, I'd have been watching a blank screen all weekend.

I dont want to be hostage to online service providers selections - maybe one day an online service won't renew their contract with HBO, which means I can't watch Game of Thrones whenever I want. But if I own my disks, I'm not hostage to corporate business contractual negotiations.

Even though I am not the OP I want to thank everyone who has responded to this thread, as I like the OP have been terrified of this whole digital cross over as well. I feel much more confident to keep increasing my "Ray of Blue" collection.

Cheers

Yeah, you need a really big screen to see any difference with UHD (& I don't think most people will see any difference even then), & it looks like the launch will be next year, & it could fall flat on its face. As for the cloud, I don't really know what it is, I thought it was just huge buildings out in the American desert somewhere full of servers, but it seems to be more than that. You can't go wrong with Blu's, & they come in that nice little blue case & they're here now, & really quite cheap & a pretty good choice of movies...& you could be dead in a years time, so enjoy 'em now.

Fortunately, it's a buyers market, not a sellers market. That's why dvd's are still around. Plenty of people don't even care about upgrading to bluray. 4K will never get past being a niche option. They'll be on a small endcap display next to the blurays. Or confusingly mixed in at BB like the dvd's and blurays! Either way, just ignore them and they'll go away. Enjoy your bluray collecting.

Well here's an opinion from across the pond...

Forget about the next step after blu unless your planning on buying a set up that will make the most of it.

As for motivation for collection, this week i've just took delivery of a region free blu-ray player. It has really opened up my collection to a whole new area which now let's me take advantage of all lovely blu's that are available in the US (as well as others) that are not available here in the UK. So your all probably see me post in your section of the forum a bit more now as long as i'm welcome

Maybe getting a region free bluray could also help you get that collecting bug itching again.
