Default Problem with Beowulf

I sat down to watch Beowulf tonight and had some problems getting it to load up on my Panny BD30. After a few attempts with it getting as far as the "Loading" screen before kicking me back out to the Panasonic Logo, I gave it a try with 24p output disabled. Sure enough, it loaded right up.

Not sure if this is isolated to the BD30, or if it's a problem with the encode. My PS3 is connected to a display that doesn't support 1080/24p so I couldn't test that, and I was being too lazy to haul the PS3 downstairs to check it out. Mainly, I'm just posting this to let anyone else that might be having a problem know that it will play fine at 1080/60p. It looks and sounds great too

Did you happen to take a get any information regarding the bitrate? Did Paramount use AVC for their BD authoring, or did they use VC-1?

How was the TrueHD track on there as well?

The TrueHD track was outstanding. Lots of use on the surrounds. Sorry, I got engrossed in watching it and didn't think to check out the video codec used. The picture is excellent though.

I checked it out today. They did use AVC and the bitrate seems to average around 30 Mbps judging from the meter on the PS3.

Yeah, Mr. K (the anti-BD-christ) is trying to make up for missing his profit estimates.

Most new Paramount don't work with the BD30 set at 24F. They must have changed or used a weird encoding scheme (like they did on HD DVD) that the BD30 doesn't like. There's at least 3-4 titles that does that..

YES!!! AVC is the way!

This raises my hopes for high quality AVC with Transformers as well.

Well I had Bestbuy price match CC and paid $25. Took awhile for them to approve it though.

I would strongly suggest that if anyone has problems playing Paramount titles in 1080p/24 on their Panny BD30s to call Panasonic tech support.

As with several other fixes for the BD30 (LFE, TrueHD dropouts), they are prompted to act when customers call in, make them aware of the issue, and have a case file opened.

Panasonic has been good about rectifying issues with firmware updates, but the fastest way to get this done is for us customers/users to let them know what's happening.

Unhappy Beowulf problems on Samsung BD-P1400

I had a problem with Beowulf also. On the Samsung BD-P1400 it gets past the loading screen and some of the special features will play but it freezes the player every time you try to access the film either with PLAY, or through the Chapter Menu. I've never had this problem with any other Blu-Ray disc.

If you absolutely need to view these features now, try disabling the 1080p/24 function on your Sammy (assuming that is the crux of your problem). In other words watch the film in straight 1080p mode (actually 1080p/60) and see if that helps.

I documented a workaround in the BD30 thread. The following is what I wrote:

"In summary, the workaround to play Beowulf at 24P is to switch the HDMI input to an alternate input and press play on the BD-30 to start the movie. Then wait 10 seconds or so and then switch to the input connected to your BD-30. In my case, I am able to play the movie on my BD-30 in 24P."

Thanks, Cool!

I just found out from a contact that is close with Panasonic (JSmiddleton, who posts in other forums) that they are busily at work on a fix for this, as well as resolving a frame skipping issue for a couple of SD-DVD titles (Star Wars IV, and Lemony Snicket).

But until the firmware update becomes available, your workaround will be the way to go.

Yea, same problem here, not jsut with beowulf, but with the guardian and world trade center, loads then returns to the player menu, resulting in having to power off/on the player countless time

So I just returned one copy of this and am still having the same issue.
I get nothing but bass for sound through my receiver. Everything is hooked up right, I watch at least a movie a day and haven't had any other issues (except the Dredd fubar discs I expected), but no matter what I change the input settings to on the player, I only get bass on the US audio (the other 2 tracks work fine). Even weirder, the sound comes through my crappy TV speakers fine. WTF is happening? I want to watch this but 2-channel TV speakers are a waste of my hearing, why won't it sound right?
I have a Sony BD-S370 player and a Denon AVR-589 receiver if that maters. Thanks in advance for any potential help. Gonna try and hook up the Magnovox player to see if that helps, but I doubt it will.

WTF squared? It's fine through the Magnavox 530. Irritating at best (running up and down stairs, unhooking and re-hooking), but at least I can hook that up to the HD set and receiver. Why no good on the Sony 370 though, which is a far faster (load times about half) and better player overall?

There is nothing wrong with the disc, if you've exchanged it twice. Apparently there is something going with audio connections on your Sony BD player! The disc disc itself is not the source of your problem. The audio on my copy played, and sounded perfect without a hitch. Are you sure you're selecting the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack from the audio menu on the disc on the Sony? Check the cable connections on the Sony, maybe somehow, they've became loose, or disconnect completely from the inputs.

It was all hooked up right, just a co-ax cable for the digital audio and no other disc has given me any problem. Then I plug the exact same co-ax into the other player, and it's fine without ever disconnecting from the receiver. Playing with the settings on the Sony changed nothing (I even tried down-mixing the audio to see if that helped), yet the Spanish and French tracks play fine on either player.

I only took back one copy and will settle for this irritating fix for now. Plus the copy I took back looked used even though it was new. The front cover looked like it got wet at some point. That was the only copy they had 2 weeks ago, this week they only had the one I exchanged it for. I'm now sure it is the players problem, just not sure why as hundreds of other discs (maybe 1000 counting dvds) I've watched on it have had no issue ever (except Dredd).

So there was no disc or player problem after all, although it makes even less sense now.
Today I notice there's not enough lights lit on my receiver. There's a button for the speakers that got accidentally pressed to just use speakers A. When I click it to use A and B, all is fine through both players, full sound.

What makes no sense is why did I get all speakers through A on one player but not the other? The single speaker light was on the whole time (probably bumped it a day or 2 ago) so it seems that using the same cord from the receiver to each player would net the same result as I didn't change anything else (both are set to digital direct on the vcr/dvd channel, both players set to stream out). Also this has happened in the past but usually I hear it right away. Most times the subwoofer goes away when only A speakers are on, this disc was only bass. Because other discs in the last couple days sounded fine I forgot to check this one thing yesterday.
