Default Blu-Ray Quality in Win8 on WinDVD and PowerDVD not as good as viewing raw file in VLC

Hi, i've installed Win8 and on playing blu rays on both WinDVD Pro 11 and PowerDVD 12 ultra, the quality of the blu ray is noticably less (text is all jagged and pixelated, like i'm watching upscaled DVD), than if I played the disc in VLC. Has anyone else had this problem? I never had it with PowerDVD on Windows 7, but the fact that i've got the same issue in powerdvd and WinDVD is odd. Any ideas? BTW I can't play back Blu Rays over VLC as it doesn't do the menu system, and isn't as good performance wise as the proper players.
