One of my favorite is Shiri.
It came at a a time (1999) for me where Korea was just coming into it's own as filmmakers. Having worked for Koreans for many years it connected with me. The characters and storyline really worked well. Well from there I was really pulled into the entire genre beyond John Woo. |

Thanks for the giveaway, this one is on my want list and one of my favorite foreign films of all time.
It's really hard to select just one foreign film as my favorite, but it would probably be Seven Samurai. It was the first Samurai film I had ever seen and still my favorite, even after seeing many more since. It was also my very first Criterion Collection blu-ray purchase. The film itself, while long, seems to fly by thanks to the excellent pacing and just the right amount of action throughout. I just get so involved in the characters and the story every time I watch it that the run time is the least of my concerns. Also, I feel it's one of the most influential foreign films of all time and has impacted most directors that have come along since it's release in some way. |

Rashomon - Despite its age and its strong influence in Japanese folklore, it speaks so fluently in the cinematic language that it feels timeless. It's a film that grips throughout as it twists in the most unforeseeable ways. Told through three different perspectives, each one adds layers to a puzzle that is made so needlessly complicated until the reveal of events puts everything into order in a way that speaks levels to all human beings, while being completely unlike anything you could of predicted. I think that if Rashomon shows one thing to me, it is that cinema is language that's universal, and if done expertly, can affect and communicate to anyone from any country and from any time. I believe Rashomon will still be seen as a great film and will continue to hold storytelling prowess for centuries on end.
![]() EDIT: I also think it's worth mentioning the Oldboy steelbook is gorgeous. ![]() Last edited by Foggy; 07-07-2014 at 06:53 PM. |

Wow tough question, I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan so for me the top would have to be Police story.
Not including my Jackie Chan collection my favourite foreign film is A Bittersweet Life. Still need to get it on blu-ray but can only get the Directors cut version and I would like the theatrical version really, will get it eventually. For anyone yet to see this movie - do so asap. Brilliant action and cinematography, superb acting and one hell of a ride. I cannot recommend this film highly enough. Also special mention has to go to The raid 2 another fantastic movie any self respecting action fan should see. I told you it was tough ![]() Great give away OP. |

Thank you for this giveaway!
Many foreign films to choose from, but I think I'll go with Ringu for this one because it scared the CR*P out of me the first time I watched it. This despite watching it at work (after EOB, my colleagues were playing Counterstrike...) with lots of lights on. When she [Show spoiler] .I've watched it many times since and the effect hasn't been as "good" but still... ![]() |
