Google Trends: Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD

Just found out about Google Trends. It's a statical search utility built inside of Google, really cool! I did a side by side comparison of Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD. Very Promising!

That's pretty cool. I wonder what caused the lone spike this year for HD DVD?

I've heard that HD DVD gets more google searches than Blu Ray. I'm happy to see that's not the case.

Looks like we need to start a massive Blu Ray promotion in Germany. That's the only place where HD DVD had more searches.

this will only seperate further in the next two months. With the Disney push, more "family" owners will be curious as to the technology of Blu-ray. My parents for example dont even know HD-DVD exists...

Looks a bit different if you use the correct hd dvd instead of hd-dvd

"HD DVD" massively outdoes Blu-Ray, but Blu-Ray massively outdoes "HD-DVD".

This lends credence to my earlier belief that HD DVD is searched for by people who know neither format, but are just searching for a High-Definition DVD.

Actually, they have a similar comparison on the eproductwars.com site. If you compare Blu-Ray vs HD DVD (No hyphen) then it's not as favorable to Blu-ray. People use different search terms, and Google obviously does not identify them as being one and the same (e.g. Blu-Ray, Bluray, BD will not be summated as searches regarding Blu-ray, neither will HDDVD, HD-DVD, and HD DVD).

This is good but what was theat hd dvd spike in mid year 2007. Plus I did blu-ray, VHS and Vhs still sells more than blu-ray in 2007. Thats weird.

One would haveto think something is fishy with the chart at edproductwars.com/dvd because their WAS a hyphen used in 2004 or 2005. Somehow, they STILL show HD DVD being ahead of Blu-ray search wise.

Actually when you search for HD DVD you find all DVD only results too so it does not count.

This is the query you can run to factor in all spellings of Blu-ray and HD DVD (only including exact matches), which shows that Blu-ray is more popular among Google searchers:

Heh, look at the one language where HD DVD outdoes Blu-Ray. It's Japanese, and as we all know Blu-Ray has been completely slaughtering HD-DUD in Japan.

So Google trends obviously have no link to actual sales trends.

They would probably search using katakana, hiragana, or kanji..
So this search probably isn't that useful for japanese results, I'd think

Anyways someone needs to tell eproduct wars to use the above chart and not the one they do use.

I know you can report classification errors, can anyone go ahead and send that info along to them?

Yeah, that's right, there are probably a lot of Japanese who would search for Blu-Ray in katakana instead of English. So if the katakana version was also included in the Google trends then Blu-Ray would most likely be ahead for Japanese as well.

God we went through this last year. Lots of threads and posts about the spellings and why the term hd dvd emcompases almost everthing

Now IF you excuse me I want to go watch 2001 in Blu
