Default Region Free European PS3 ?

A friend of mine who lives in London has preorderd his PAL playstation 3 and asked me if he can play my games on his ps3 and watch the movies i have.

As we know the NTSC ps3 is region free but what about the European one?

The games will all work.

The region free/all regions Blu-ray movies will work, the US/Japan region only ones wont.

(I tried to post this here yesterday but apparentely my post needed admin approval... which I am sure either it didn't get or was lost in the admin's mailbox... its now over 24 hours and still, nothing) Update: Ooops! It's up!

Regarding PS3 games being "Universal"

According to a PS3 FAQ thread over at ntsc-uk.domino.org, I quote:

Are PS3 games region-locked?

Nope, well, neither NTSC-J or NTSC-U games are. Both boot fine on either a Japanese or American machine. Rumour suggests however, that European games won't work on an NTSC machine and vice versa.

(end of quote)

So, until someone actually tries EURO PS3 games on US / JAP / HK Playstation3's, and vice-versa, the jury is still out on this "universal" PS3 games thing.

I sure hope they are, as I live in Europe and my PS3 is north-american.

Yes, my thoughts exactly... I should have returned the package but I was so eager to try out Blu-Rays on my PS3 and 50" HD plasma...

I'm anxiously awaiting word on actual EURO PS3 games on American / Japanese machines.... **fingers crossed**

The PS3 games have 480p BASIC resolution. That's for NTSC. 528p I think would be PAL. However, games are RENDERED unlike video, and they must be rendered at both SD and HD (BASIC HD is 720p regardless which region you are in) resolution.

Fuad,

to the less tech-savy, does this mean the PAL / NTSC debacle from previous game media generations (Cartridges, cds, DVDs) does not apply anymore?

I wouldn't trust the rumours, it was unexpected that SCEI would pull through with region free on PSP but they did, from every region to every region. They've already opened the floodgates for U/C region gamers to buy Japanese PS3 games and vice versa so it makes no sense to stop either region using Euro games or Europeans using U/C or J games.

It doesn't. It doesn't apply to 480i/p or 576i/p. It definitely doesn't apply to 720p and 1080i/p.

Once the PAL regions launch, you guys can set up US/Canada/South America/Japan, Taiwan, Hongkong or Singapore accounts and download the demo games from there and play it on your PAL PS3 at 576i/p. Games from Japan have Japanese text so beware!

720p means that it'll run at 720p only. If your HDTVs cannot accept 720p input, the game will play in 576p. If it does, it'll play in 720p. Only 1080i/p games can play in either 720p or 1080i/p.

I'm just hoping someone with an NTSC machine can soon test Euro PS3 games and post results here.

I too believe Sony when they say all games are region-free. But then again, I also believed the 100% backwards compatability from day 1, and the dual HDMI-out, and all others sorts of promises from Sony before.

I bought the Euro version of GT5:P and the game will not play on my NTSC PS3. The intro will play and then it freezes @ Accessing game data.
