Default question about ps4 and ps3

Ok, this is my question:

Can I play multiplayer games from my PS4 with someone who has a PS3?

So for example:

I buy a PS4 and Battlefield 4.
A friend doesn't buy the PS4 (yet), but he does buy Battlefield 4 for his PS3.

Can we still do multiplayer games? So connect PS3 & PS4 BF4 servers?

I dont know how that would make sense seeing as Battlefield on Next gen consoles supports way more player on the field.

Think its developer based right? The last cross platform play I remember is just FFXI and maybe that was just since it was an MMORPG. Honestly I dont think Sony would though since they would like users to buy the PS4 instead of sticking with the ps3

Depends on the game. Final Fantasy XIV is cross-platform PC-PS3-PS4.

Yup and FFXI was PS2, XBox, and PC. I think it just depends if the developer is willing to develop the game for the different consoles as I don't believe they 'talk' to each other in the way the OP think is thinking. They are really talking to a server which is doing all the translating for them, so there isn't any direct connections between the platforms.
