Ok, this is my question:
Can I play multiplayer games from my PS4 with someone who has a PS3? So for example: I buy a PS4 and Battlefield 4. A friend doesn't buy the PS4 (yet), but he does buy Battlefield 4 for his PS3. Can we still do multiplayer games? So connect PS3 & PS4 BF4 servers? |

Think its developer based right? The last cross platform play I remember is just FFXI and maybe that was just since it was an MMORPG. Honestly I dont think Sony would though since they would like users to buy the PS4 instead of sticking with the ps3

Yup and FFXI was PS2, XBox, and PC. I think it just depends if the developer is willing to develop the game for the different consoles as I don't believe they 'talk' to each other in the way the OP think is thinking. They are really talking to a server which is doing all the translating for them, so there isn't any direct connections between the platforms.
