Gwanghae: The Man Who Became King is a 2012 South Korean historical film starring Lee Byung-hun in dual roles as the bizarre King Gwanghae and the humble acrobat Ha-sun, who stands in for the monarch when he faces the threat of being poisoned. The international title is Masquerade.

Currently the third highest grossing Korean film of all time with 12.3 million tickets sold, it swept the 49th Grand Bell Awards, winning in 15 categories, including Best Film, Director, Screenplay and Actor.

Masquerade Blu-ray review

I just happened to see the Blu-ray.com review this afternoon. Since I've liked all of the increasing number of Korean films I've been able to see over the past several months, MASQUERADE sounded intriguing enough (even if it sounds mainly like a Korean variation on KAGEMUSHA) that I stopped by Best Buy on the way home and bought a copy.

It will be a couple of weeks before I get time to watch it, unfortunately. If it reinterprets KAGEMUSHA from a Korean perspective as well as THE MAN FROM NOWHERE reworked LEON THE PROFESSIONAL into a distinctively Korean identity, I'll be satisfied. Some great films coming out of Korea the past few years!

I just got the South Korean version. It will not play on my region B PlayStation 3.

The Korean release is nice, but at more than $40 (on YesAsia) expensive. I got the U.S. disc recently from Best Buy.com for only $9.99.

Very good movie. I believe it's still on Netflix if anyone wants to sample it first.
