Default LIMITED EDITIONS.....Why??

If this has been asked and answered before, I apologize for the repitition, but......A while back the original (Roddy McDowell) FRIGHT NIGHT was released in Blu, but limited to just a few thousand copies. Now, I've read that the '80s remake (Kevin Dillon) of THE BLOB is being released, but only 3,000 copies. WTF?? Don't the studios that own the rights to given titles want to sell as many as possible? If these titles were made available at Best Buy, WalMart, Barnes & Noble, Amzon etc. they's probable sell 10 or 20 times the number of copies than when limited to such a small number. Why does this happen?? Thanks

Because if they released them widely, they couldn't charge $45 each and actually sell them.

I really dislike this business model as well. They have had some other releases aside form the ones you mentioned that were also limited to 3,000 copies. I get the whole supply and demand thing, but as I said, I don't like this business practice either.

long story short it's sony and they've decided that if they can't make mega bucks on catalog titles then it's not worth the effort to release them so they shuffle all their catalog titles off to Twilight Times, Mill Creek, Echo Bridge etc. where they get paid up front for the titles and have to do zero work

This arrangement supposedly works out best for both Twilight Time and it's licensors (namely their accountants) in that Twilight Time licenses a set number of copies for a flat fee upfront.

This has been debated to death in the Fright Night (1985) and Night of the Living Dead (1990) threads.
