Default Best iPod connection to AV Receiver?

I read an article online about hooking up an Apple iPod to an AV receiver. It said for best audio to connect the iPod to an Apple iPod Dock and connect a 3.5mm to RCA(L,R Audio) cable to 'line out' of the iPod Dock and to the left/right RCA inputs of the receiver.

Is this the right way to do it?

Most AV receivers have a USB port and I would use that to connect the iPod. The USB should receive the music as a digital input and use the DACs in the receiver which should be better than the DACs in the iPod
