Default Nielsen numbers for box sets

What do box sets do to the sales numbers? Sets like Spidey and Die hard give you 3 or 4 movies, but only counts as one sale. I know Spidey doesn't have individual sales for 1 and 2 right now, but Die Hard for $90 as a single sale seems like the sales numbers will be a lot lower than single movies. How exactly do these work for the numbers since all the Die Hard movies will be sold individually?

One SKU is one SKU. Nielsen only count SKU:s. What if they started to count ever disc as separate sales doubling double-titles sales or count every feature in the box as a sale?

Nielsen only counts what is scanned at the POS (Point of Sale), nothing more nothing less. Very simple and posted several times.

Got you a little peeved did I? Chill out. I wanted to know how people felt about what one sku @ $90 would do for the numbers of the collection vs. one sku @ $27.95. In my mind it affects the sales numbers.

You might be able to have a facinating discussion on AVS about this... Just ask about the signifigance of The Matrix Trilogy vs the two Pirates movies.

It will be intresting to see how Sony spins Spiderman 3, since the box set will dilute the numbers of the individual release. The same could be said for Fox and the Die Hards.

The Die Hards are all available individually, whereas SM1 and SM2 for the time being are available only in the box set. Only SM3 is available separately.

That's exactly what I'm trying to say. It seems that the box sets take away from the higher number of the individual sales. People keep talking about how The Die Hard Quad will beat TF, but at that price point even though you get 4 movies I don't know if it will generate the numbers...especially since there are the individual's available. Please don't take this negatively...I'm just wondering if the individual sales numbers would be huge without a box set.

Pat,

I know I should have worded Spiderman differently, but bascially the issue is that the box set will likely impact the numbers of Spider Man 3's individual release.

And let's be honest... If you're going to buy Live Free or Die Hard, aren't you generally going to bite and get the box set? The sales of the box set affect the sales of Live Free or Die Hard the same way.

So are you saying they shouldn't be releasing the SM box set? Sony apparently are not ready to release SM1 and SM2 separately because they have not yet done the same degree of special features as with SM3. Yet they are giving consumers the option of just getting SM3 by itself or all three together. They will certainly get more revenue than if they just released SM3 by itself with no box set. Anyone who doesn't want to spend the price of the box set will just buy SM3. It is true that individual sales of SM3 will be less than if there were no box set, but sales revenue on a combined basis will clearly be higher.

Ummm.... Who's being that delusional? I'm all for being a little "Rah! Rah!" but some people need a bit of a reality check.

I know that the transfer quality of DH4 will be superb because it is a new movie and recently Fox has been getting outstanding results with new movies. The other three are not new movies, so I don't really know what I'm getting. I don't want to take that kind of chance. So I personally am getting DH4 and DH3 and if DH3 looks good I might consider getting the other two.

No I'm all for the box set, but I keep hearing about these movies that will beat the TF numbers and it's got me thinking just how big the numbers will be. All I'm saying is they won't be as high...that doesn't mean I don't think they should put the box sets out.

Like I was saying about it's all of these people in the "Movies that will beat Transformers" type threads. I think there are some delusional people here, but I can't fault them cause they just love Blu-ray.

Personally my favorite is the first one closely followed by the second so I want the set, but I'm hoping they're packaged individually.

Sony will only care about the number of units sold, be it box or individual, not the Nielsons on this. Same with FOX. Trust me, they know how many movies are in a box set.
