Default Titles worth upgrading/double-dipping for 3D?

Getting a 3DTV, unfortunately I already own the 2D blu-ray's of most of these movies --

Final Destination
Resident Evil
Alice in Wonderland
Drive Angry
Piranha
Coraline
Monster House
Despicable Me
SAW
Bolt
Monsters vs. Aliens
Nightmare before Christmas

With most being pricey ($28-40), it's a bit hard to double-dip on some of these, just for the 3D version. I've seen reviews for the above, and some have been mixed (mostly depending when they were done (last year vs. this year) or what the reviewer was looking for (natural depth or "in your face" moments). Looking for opinions on which of these, if any, are not only a good 3D presentation, but one that would be worth it even after owning a 2D version (something where the 3D really enhances the movie)

In Alice's case, that's a definite "unfortunately".

Native 3-D movies, though, were set up to use their engine, so it's the same as not buying the Blu-ray of a movie you already own on DVD--Could you watch it knowing there was "more" of it out there somewhere?

If you have to limit it to three, though, Nightmare's just a conversion.
A better conversion than most, but you'll see what I mean on the native Coraline--It's better to have a director who knows it's there.

I own Pirahna and Res. Evil in 3D and both are great! can't comment on the rest. The 3D in Alice was great at the movies, I just personally didn't enjoy the movie itself. If you own it, I guess you do, so this might be worth the double dip.
Is your Coraline anaglyph 3D? Mine is. I've never watched it any other way, but probably won't double dip for this as I can still watch it in "3D", despite not being perfect...
I double dipped for Clash of the Titans, and gave my 2D to a mate. It wasn't the best 3D presentation, but I still enjoyed it, and love the movie anyway, hence wanting a 3D copy if it was available.
I own Christmas Carol and Beowulf in 2D and will definately double-dip for these.

Thanks everyone --

I also wasnt a big fan of Alice. It was more of those "if it's an incredible 3D experience, I'll check it out" thing. I was also thinking of passing on Nightmare for that same reason (until it comes down in price at least).

My coraline is anaglyph, but the 3D Blu comes up a lot in "best of" lists -- anyone able to comment on if it's worth the upgrade (it seems to be one of the pricier titles).

Ordered Resident Evil 3D (big fan), was tempted on Drive Angry and Piranha.. those are worth upgrading for?

I guess it comes down to how much of a difference there is. Watching the latest Harry potter in 3D, I didn't think the 3D added too much to it (it seemed pretty subtle), while some movies really make use of the 3D and are hard to watch without it (Journey to the center of the earth, for example, comes off sort of silly in 2D since it was obviously made for 3D).

Piranha and Drive Angry seem like they'd have a lot of benefit from 3D (in a not-so-subtle way)

I've seen the anaglyph version (and only a few clips in active-shutter) and I've compared a few other dual-format titles, and I can say that it's generally better to have a movie in the right colors.
Like the MvA short, up to now, i kept remembering Coraline in green and purple.

I have the promo of Coraline 3d that was included with my 3d glasses from panasonic and it's pretty awesome, I must say. Great use of 3d. The use of it kept my attention throughout the movie. I probably wouldn't have given this movie a 2nd thought if it never had a 3d version.

by what you own, I think we like different sorts of things, but I've seen all of those in 3D and I'd say my top 3 in 3D for "fun" 3D would be:
Drive Angry
Piranha
Resident Evil

For the most story serving I'd say:
Alice in Wonderland
Coraline
and any of the above

But pretty much all the computer animated stuff (Bolt, etc) look great.

Thanks! I guess "Fun" would be the best word to describe what I'm looking for. Liked Resident Evil/Piranha, haven't even watched Drive Angry yet, but it looks like my kind of movie. Sounds like those will be my first 3.

Thanks!

The UK versions of some of those movies you have already have the 3D version on them. Not sure what they are like on retail in the US though. Saw, Piranha and Drive Angry.

However, Despicable Me is a MUST have in 3D! It is demo material at it's very best - pop out and depth is wonderful. Coraline is a little more subtle, but still great in 3D. Imagine how Wizard of Oz changed to colour when Dotty went to Oz .... well the same kinda thing happens with the 3D in Coraline when she enters the other world. Great indeed.

Thanks! I'll check those out.

For the movies you listed (Saw/Piranha/Drive Angry), they're available in both 2D or 2D+3D versions in the US. Drive Angry was about double the price of the 2D version ($15 to $25), Piranha lost features on the 3D version, but was only a few bucks more (and since I didn't have a TV, I went with the 2D version).

I do have a few 2D+3D titles so far - Step Up 3D and Tron 3D.

Just ordered Resident Evil, Drive Angry 3D and Final Destination 3D (all titles I already own in 2D ). Very tempted for Piranha, but seeing a lot of mixed reviews on it (from GREAT! to one of the worst 3D translations)

The 3D in Resident Evil and Drive Angry make the movie better. The pop out in both of those movies is top notch. Pirahna is not as much a pop out movie. There is more depth. I suspect 3D does not add a whole lot, but I have not seen the 2D version. On other thing to consider is whether you have a 2D-3D conversion feature on your TV or blu-ray player. I recently watched Megamind converted. It look fairly good and convinced me to pass on upgrading.

I also own Step Up 3D and it is terrific in 3D! The film sucks a bit though. Also, not all of Tron is in 3D ... I have not bothered with it as I have heard mixed reviews.

I didn't like the 3D in Alice. I found the conversion pointless and at times irritating. The movie was OK, and I found it to be an interesting (and at times creepy) spin on a classic story.

The 3D in Piranha is a bit hit and miss. It starts out incredibly poor but does settle down after a while. It is one film I would rather see in 2D tbh.

Drive Angry has some nice over the top 3D ... not the best overall movie, but the 3D has to be seen.

Resi has some good 3D effects, but I find the 2.35:1 aspect ratio a little off putting. However, this and Step Up are probably the best looking 3D imho.

I do recommend A Turtle's Tale for what I consider to be the best pop-out 3D experience out there!

I really do want to see the Turtle's Tale in 3D but unfortunately I like in the U.S. and the only one I can buy is the Hong Kong for like 40 dollars and that's alot for a blind buy.

I am hoping it will come here like it did for the U.K.

Resident Evil is still my fave 3D experience to date. I couldn't believe just how great it was. It was also my first 3D experience I had when I got my new TV and still stands out from the others I thought. It was filmed in 3D and really looks amazing cause every scene was basically set up in ways that would look best in 3D. People complain about all the slow motion shots and I figure in 2D these might be a bit much but I loved them all in the 3D version. Amazing.

I found Piranha was a little to dark in certain scenes so the 3D didn't work as well for those.

I agree, the slow motion shots in 3D always look great!

Oh and to the OP, Bolt is a terrific film. The 3D still stands up well today, even though it was one of the first out there. I don't own the film, I rented it and was almost drawn to tears! It's probably the saddest movie I have ever seen! I remember putting it back in it's case and saying to myself "that's a film I will never watch again!" What am I like!

Monster House has some nice 3D too, but again, it is one of the earlier ones and this I am afraid doesnt stand up so well today as say Bolt does. I may be the dark scenes, it may be the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Dunno, but it doesn't quite stand up to multiple viewings.

I found Saw 3D poor, maybe the darker scenes let it down. Others rave on about it, so maybe it was just me. But I couldn't settle on it.

Step Up 3D is probably the best showcase for 3D in my opinion. It is family friendly and you have your choice of demo scenes as there are choices aplenty. I usually skip to The Battle of Red Rock scene.

I pull it out everytime I need to convince the naysayers. So far, I am 100% with people going from "I don't think 3D is a big deal," to "Ok now I understand."

I've not seen Bolt yet, or the 3D version of Drive Angry. And part five of Final Destination is way way better, so I'd recommend just waiting for that one to come out. I'd just skip Saw altogether. Nothing too remarkable there. But other than that, my first two picks on your list for an over all combination of fun and heaviest 3D effect would be Despicable Me and Monsters vs Aliens. I didn't like the converted 3D in Piranha. I'm waiting to see how the new one is. It's supposed to be native 3D. I don't like A Nightmare Before Christmas at all either. Even in 3D I can't take all that damn singing.

But seriously, the rest are all fantastic in 3D and in my opinion should be considered must haves. I know it's pretty tough to try and buy them all at once though, especially with all the great upcoming releases too.

I've upgraded a couple titles already, 'A Christmas Carol' and 'Alice in Wonderland'. Both were worth it IMO, especially 'A Christmas Carol'. I also own a few of those titles you mentioned, but I've never seen the 2D versions.

*Resident Evil (Great 3D, Demo material)
*Drive Angry (Fun movie, 3D really enhances it)
*Despicable Me (Pop-Out & Depth are on point, looks REALLY good)
*Pirahhna (Not sure if it's a necessary upgrade, it's a conversion, but I enjoyed it)

(I know you're trying to say that about all Disney films, but Danny Elfman Tim-Burton-Music With Lyrics is day one purchase in my book. )

TBH, any film I have put on to change the naysayers opinions have worked and convinced them that 3D is terrific ... especially at home! I have not used any conversions to demo though I must add.
