Default My greatest movie collection fear right now...

Do you keep your movie collection in full sight of passerbyers or or do you hide it out of the sight of friends, visitors, kids, one-night stands and the like who, at one time or another, will no doubt reason with themselves, "hmm, looks like he's got hundreds of movies...he won't notice if I take this one"..... I'm recently divorced (and moved out, you know the drill) and I suddenly feel very vulnerable without a man cave to escond my 1000-movie collection...do you have get-togethers and mixers with your collection in full sight? My living room area is the only viable option outside of renting a storage unit and I fear that slowly, my collection will start walking out the front door in bits and fits by people who think to themselves "he won't even notice"...and they're right, I probably wouldn't...for weeks or months, if ever, after the fact.

Or do I just need to have greater faith in my fellow man?

I wouldn't invite someone into my home if I thought for a second I couldn't trust them. Good rule to live by.

Alright, that a bit of a cop out and not a real-world application of a gathering of people with varying degrees of separation from you. You are saying if you have a party of 20 folks or so, some of them noodling over various portions of your collection, you wouldn't be concerned of the outcome of your collection by the end of the night? Beforehand, all I had to to was go back in my man cave/office area and bring a disc out front. I trust people not to steal my bluray player, not so much with the hundreds of small, easily concealable discs to choose from....

Well, I'm not much of a party host myself. If I'm at a get-together, it's at someone else's house. lol The people who visit my home are a small and intimate bunch.

find a way to store them in your bedroom. put up shelves on the wall.

I lived with 2 roommates at one point and kept my collection in the living room. They had groups of friends over. Get togethers. Never a party, so I didn't worry all that much. Eventually I just hung shelves across the wall in my room.

I live with a relative at the moment so I have zero control over who she invites over. At one point my niece was living with us and she was actively dating and bringing dudes over for visits, which, naturally, made me worry a bit. These weren't necessarily stand-up looking guys lol. You never who might end up being thieves at heart. I'm not much of a host, either, so luckily I'm never going to have get-togethers (at least not until I get my own place) so there's less of a chance of my stuff walking out the door but it is always in the back of my mind.

The trick is to own movies that most other people have no desire to watch.

Personally, I live in a 2 story condo. One wall of the upstairs bedroom is Movie Central, two 4' X8' bookshelves which handle most of my collection and a side table next to them handle the rest (oversized sets)...

Only invite people from here who are in the 1000 plus club most likely they would have a hard time finding something they already don't have😄
But if you are worried about friends/ family taking one of a few I'd reexamine the relationship you have with them

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I only open my home up to people I am close to and trust. I don't worry about these things because I don't throw wild parties with strangers attending or invite one-night stands into my home. I mean, I always felt that if those kind of people were coming into your home....the movies would be the last thing to worry about, right?

The gatherings I entertain in my home are close and personal friends whom we have developed a trusting relationship with and we respect one another and each other's property.

Like I said, maybe I'm old fashioned like that, but it seems to work for me so far.

Perhaps finding some kind of covering over your movie collection would help. I have a large movie shelf from a closed down video store, so it would be easy to throw a sheet or two over them and no one would see my collection. Heck, you can even buy a sheet for this purpose and paint it with decorative art work to make it blend in more with your surroundings. Just a thought.

Or, hang around a better quality of people?

My greatest movie collection fear is disc-rot. Having said that, a full-on house burglary is a worry. The way my collection is organised, I would quickly notice a missing disc.

I trust all my friends and any friends they feel worthy of bringing into my home. Plus most of my friends are into board games and my board game collection is much more valuable than my movie collection. So I'd be worried about that first, but again I trust my friends so I'm not actually worried about that.

You might want to consider getting new friends. Possibly moving or upgrading security of your apartment by the sound of it

I keep my collection in my bedroom. No one gets in there without my permission. You should put your collection in your bedroom, and make sure there's a lock on your bedroom door.
