United Kingdom David Lean's Great Expectations BD 6/16

I see that this is on Play's website with a June 16 release date. Does anyone know whether or not it's region-free? Thanks.

I'd rather see Great Expectations on a theater stage. This is one of those stories that never feels "at home" on film.

Wow... Great news... Sir John Mills on Blu-ray. An excellent film, a true classic. Pre-ordering now!!!

EDIT:

PS. I note that this disc is released by ITV (they have rights to Rank movies). I would suggest that it is about time that "The Riddle of the Sands" was released.

I watched Hesher the other day and it give me a need to watch again Great Expectations. The films are so similar really. I'm assuming Charles Dickens's copyright is now out of date

Anyway, the ITV Blu-ray http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcom...reatexpect.htm is wonderful. It's had some negative reviews picture-wise but it's a revelation when you compare it to any print I've ever seen. I have the Criterion and UK DVD and also a very good TV recording. They all pale in comparison.

It's a shame there's no extras though. Real shame. If you liked Guinness in KHAC wait until you see him in this!

A true British classic from David Lean.

Ł8.99 @ http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Blu-ray/IT...lu-ray)-(1946)

I have tested the disc in a locked A setup and it's fine.

There is what looks to be a port in Australia too http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews...ws.asp?ID=9045

The price of the ITV disc fluctuates massively. No sign of it on ITV's website although they do have a Royal wall calendar http://itv.seenon.com/detail.php?p=306169 I suppose that's something.

I want to know when they are going to release some of the other Lean films they have the rights to.
They have all been restored so that's not an issue.
specifically they need to release In Which We Serve asap.
the thing is ITV seems to have stopped releasing any older classics, as they haven't come out with any new older titles for some time, unless I've missed something.
Honestly I think they may have given up on classic bd unfortunately.
If anyone has any evidence to the contrary I'd love to see it.
the last time I looked all the classic bds weren't even available to order from the ITV store.
they aren't even listed anymore except for the dvd versions.
so imo that doesn't lead me to feel very confident about ITV and future classic bds.

Hmm. Watched this last night. Enjoyed it but also slightly disappointed. Don't quite know how to feel about this.

You could ask this question for every other title in your collection. This movie is high rated in different top 100 British films lists.

Great Expectations isn't going to be for everyone. There's plenty of information out there on it and it's not like the artwork is hiding anything. I think it's a wonderful film.

I hate 100s of films and think 1000s more are complete shit and -yes- it's just an opinion.

Its a classic...full stop, one of the best British films and one of David Lean's greatest. From David Lean, the greatest director who has ever lived.
I could write essays about this film...the cinematography, Alec Guiness' first credited film role etc etc
The ITV blu ray is fantastic too
Thats all my opinion

Wow.

Talk about communication breakdown, eh?

First of all I've read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I love it. And I've read Svet's review(which was great by the way). Of course I knew what this film was about. But I had never seen David Lean's adaptation of it.

Secondly, I never said I didn't like the film. I did. Occasionally even loved it. But as a person who's read the original novel multiple times I couldn't help but to notice how much more superficial the characters were and Pip wasn't the central figure on the novel like he is here.

David Lean's Great Expectations is a great film on its own. Great acting and a good story. Perhaps Mills was a tad too old to play Pip but it's easily excusable because of his acting and chemistry with Hobson. But it's far from perfect as an adaptation(even though it is the best adaptation of the novel so far).To me, Dickens novels don't feel, like Sylin mentioned, 'at home' on film. Two hours simply is not enough.

So, yes, I was disappointed but not because it was a bad film but because I probably was expecting too much.

I should've been a bit clearer on my first post(s). Maybe you get my point now.

Peace?

Dude, that's much clearer We were thinking you expected Jason Van Statham in it or something

When I first watched GE I didn't think very much of it at all but after a few decades it has grown on me quite a bit. Maybe you can return to it in a few years.

That's what's good about film -it never changes* -we do.

It's ITV, so unless Via Vision or The Film Foundation pay for it they're restoring nothing, whether it be to 4K, 2K or Special K.
