Thumbs up How many are you withholding purchases until 4k/atmos versions arrive?

For brand new movies, especially ones that were mixed in Atmos from 3 years ago, I have stopped buying them altogether.

For older classics, black and white films... I don't care as much on the audio side. I won't care if they remixed casablanca or nosferatu in Atmos... but i would love those in 4k one day.

Either way, both 4k and atmos announcements are bound to kill sales. I think a bulk of blu-ray sales come from enthusiast. Average joe are still purchasing DVDs or not buying anything, but rent from redbox or stream.

What are you doing?

I'm just waiting on something concrete, which the BDA said would happen with an announcement of specs about a year from now. Until then I'm just going to sit on hold. Also, between L'armee's list (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=218262) and my list (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=220755) of 4K DIs we will be able to weed out any 4K titles that do not have a 4K DI.

IMO I don't see much difference in 4K vs. Blu's especially on the display I have so I won't be getting any 4K films.

Then you're either not sitting close enough or your display is not large enough. There's a reason why theater screens, which are 4K, are so large.

Yet, movies that are finished in 2K can't be shown in 4K.

The jump from 2K to 4K is not big enough for me so I'll keep buying standard BD, thank you very much.

That's my point. The studios may try to pull something by putting a 2K DI on a 4K disc when the format arrives. That's why I mentioned the lists.

Well, considering that there are good number of films/shows that haven't made their way to DVD let alone blu ray, I can't see myself investing in 4K anytime soon. Only major studio titles and a few classics will make their way to the format.

I'll keep buying what I'm buying, until the PS5 comes out with 4K, or the PS4 get an update that allows it to display 4K.

I'm not rich, nor do I want to wait 5 years to buy a new movie when the tech is affordable, so no. I'll keep on keeping on. Blu-ray is still the jam.

Like Ghostbusters, I'll only jump to 4K on the titles that are dramatic improvements over their BD counterparts.

EDIT: I know GB isn't really a 4K disc, but the message still stands, I'll only buy if the picture quality is improved.

Yeah, 4k seems cool. But at this point I've bought most of the films I have to own on blu ray. When the 4k switch happens ill buy new films that way but life is too short to sit around for four or five years for 4k to become standard enough that I can buy everything that way. But, that's just me.

I'll stick with Blu, thanks.

As far as audio, I still use good ol' DD 5.1, so I'm not too concerned with Atmos at home.

If I were a betting man, then I'd say that 90% of my current collection is pretty safe from becoming obsolete, and that most of the titles that I'll be picking up in late 2014 and 2015 (1940s/1950s film noirs, 1980s B-movie horror flicks, old foreign films, etc.) are also pretty safe from becoming obsolete.

If you are a collector who buys all of the latest and greatest new releases from Marvel and such, then it probably makes more sense to wait and see. Even then, though, you're still good to go on Blu-rays.

I won't be waiting but I can say I have scaled back on the number of blu's I purchase.

Cheers!

I'm not waiting for anything. I just started collecting blus a few months ago and I am more than happy with them. 4k is still a little to expensive for my blood. Until it becomes the standard and the prices drop I'll stay right where I am at and keep buying my blus!

I feel this way. When and if I buy a new TV, it's not going to be much bigger than my current 46", and I'll be sitting about four or five feet away. A well-produced blu-ray looks incredible on my set up (watched TT's The Man From Laramie recently -- remarkable), and I can't escape the feeling that any improvements will be barely perceptible.

If blu-ray still qualifies as "niche", then 4K is going to need to spend a lot of time as a "niche within a niche". And as that time passes, technology will continue to develop, increasing the likelihood that 4K will give way to yet another format.

I mean, if it's hard to generate excitement about 4K here, then imagine how difficult it'll be to sell to John Q. Public, who could scarcely be bothered to sniff dismissively at home 3-D, which is appreciably different from standard blu-ray.

Thanks for linking these. My above-stated estimate about 90% of my collection being safe from becoming obsolete seems fairly correct, barring unforeseen circumstances in the future.

Same here, most of collection are 20th century films.

I don't get this "waiting for the ultimate perfect edition" mindset, life's too short. There always will be something even better round the corner with formats now replacing each other at ever shorter time spans and with less major difference to see unless you have the most high-end of setups.

I'm sticking with Blu-ray for quite a few years yet. Prices for software and hardware will be high to start out with, so I won't be an early adopter.
