Interesting. I just got done watching the UK Captain Clegg BD, and I went back and counted 5/8 of Universal's Hammer Horror Series has now made it to Blu-ray. I was wondering when Curse of the Werewolf would show up. I guess I have my answer. I wonder if a Final Cut Entertainment release isn't forthcoming in the UK?

I don't have any Anolis Entertainment releases? How are they quality wise? The Final Cut Entertainment releases are a bit spotty.

Anolis releases are usually equivalent to the UK releases PQ wise. They use the same masters. The titles they have released so far were of the Hammer/Studio Canal batch and they had identical PQ to the UK releases. Curse is a title of the Universal batch of Hammer films. Screenshots by Anolis indicate that PQ is similar to Universal titles released by Final Cut or Icon and like the Evil of Frankenstein UK release for example.

Captain Clegg is one of the worst UK releases with a shoddy 1080i/50Hz transfer but that's not the fault of Final Cut I guess. They just release what they get.

Working for Anolis I am a bit biased but I would say on most releases we do a pretty decent job.

For CURSE we were able to get an HD master in the same aspect ratio as the previous DVD releases (1:1,85) and not the rather artificial 1:2,00 ratio Universal seems to use on nearly all HD transfers of their library. Below are some screenshots showing you how awfull the initial HD transfer had been framed:

I hope you kike what see.

BTW, the release comes in 2 slightly different versions: A limited Mediabook and in an unlimited Standard Blu-ray case. Here is a shot of the packaging:

I hope you all like it.

Thanks. I also watched The Phantom of the Opera (1962) recently, and, sadly it was much better in the PQ department. I will keep an eye out for a UK release.

This is really a beautiful release. However it seems for some reason someone at Universal (or whoever provided the master for this release) doesn't want us to know that this movie was processed in Technicolor, as the letters "Technicolor" have clearly been erased in the front credits. At this point the german blu-ray defaults to a still picture of Oliver Reed's eyes in the background, with the credits in the foreground.

Any explanation, Ivo? (It's nice having you on the board, btw.)

The screenshots are taken with my phone and are in no way representative of the actual image quality and are for illustration purposes only. The german transfer is NOT as dark as this picture might imply.

I've seen this on several TV showings over the years. Perhaps the print used as the source was one processed by another company (Eastman?).

Well Technicolor originally did the prints, but it was shot on Eastman negative. They wouldn't use a print for the Blu-ray, they probably used an interposative, I wouldn't think they went back to the original negatives. So Technicolor has nothing to do with this transfer, but then again it has nothing to do with any transfer of a film done after the Technicolor three-strip process ended (early fifties), but this is the first time I've heard of the Technicolor credit being omitted.

I'm told by some Brits that this isn't anything new, even going back to tv broadcasts in the 80's.

What does a movie's age have to do with price? If you love the movie, who cares how old it is and how much it costs? Sheesh.

Its got everything to do with the price.. Movie distributors are steadily re-releasing old catalogue titles with the catch word 'remastered' and attaching a heavy premium to it as well. Because people end up paying the prices continue to steadily rise..Theres nothing attached to this blu ray release that warrants a price tag more than £20. Im sure others on this forum will agree on me on this..

Most people do care, because they have limited money to spend on things like blu-rays.

Personally, I'm reluctant to spend £30 on Werewolf, because if a UK release appears at some point, at say £12 or £10, that means I've wasted quite a lot of money.

I have limited funds, I had to cancel my preorder. Right now is not a good time for me to get this on release date. But if it's a movie I care about, the age of it has nothing to do with what I feel it is financial worth. "Old" should never equate "cheap."

I don't disagree with that ..on certain releases movie company spend a whole of time in reconstructing and restoring the movie to pristine condition but there should be a line that should be drawn.. look at universals release of Jaws if you look a the amount of work universal put into restoring the movie it was huge .. The new release was flawless but even that with all the extras crammed into it was priced at £17 as a steelbook.. This put things into relativity.. I think Anolis are taking advantage of the fact that they are first to release this move on to blu ray and attaching a hefty price tag to it.. The media book does look nice but a bit pointless if its printed in German .. I might wait for the normal one to drop in price as im not too bothered about the packaging for this one..

I'm waiting to see what Final Cut manage first, though I'm not holding out much hope on that score.

Is there a release date for that one?
