Sony Reveals New PlayStation Store

Sony are currently showing off the new PS Store (seen above) at an event in London. More info soon.

The new store, which is apparently coming very soon (there’s PSN maintenance on Monday, which might be pertinent…) takes lots of comments and feedback on board, and aims to create a massively improved experience for everyone.

It will work on a "carousel" design scrolling from left to right like the PS3′s XMB, and introduce smart searching and content filtering.

It will be rolled out across PAL regions on October 17 following scheduled PSN maintenance, with a US launch planned for October 23.

I honestly don't care how it looks as long as it functions the same. I never have problems being able to find what I want pretty freaking quick.

Thank you for posting this, but I don't like it at all. Reminds me too much of Xbox's Dashboard, but maybe that is the intended purpose.

But on the other hand, maybe I'm just being stubborn. I just don't like change in general

Hopefully they give us an option to sort our download list too. I've got thousands of items in my download history, and sometimes it's like finding a needle in a haystack, especially for the handful of items that have been de-listed from the PSN marketplace.

If they want to have a robust filter option, then you should be able to filter by more than one thing. I.e. I want to only see my PS3 full games that I paid for or I want to see the psp demos that I downloaded in 2011 2010 or whatever.

Also, the store will be reused and improved on PS4. Better to get started now and work out the kinks, much like XBL started on XB and improved on 360.


This is the reason they will sell ads IMHO.

Microsoft sells ads on the Xbox 360 Dashboard at a CPM of between $19 to $23, depending on the ad placement and the type of ad. You’ll pay an extra 20% for animated or video ads, and if you’d like to select specific demographics for those ads, you’ll pay an extra 15% per “targeting criteria,” with the maximum bump being 30%.

So if I’m running a video ad that I want to send to two specific and overlapping target markets, I’m paying between $28.50 and $34.50 to Microsoft for every 1,000 people who see my ad.

The minimum spend to put your ad in the kind of rotation that might get someone’s attention, according to the source, is $40,000.

Many companies spend much more when they buy an ad for their product. “$250,000 will get you a good run for about three weeks,” my source stated. “If you do multiple campaigns like one for a trailer, one for a demo, etc., that’s where you start crossing the $500,000 mark.” Keep in mind this money simply puts your ad in rotation, as Microsoft sells multiple campaigns at a time and, if you aim your campaign at your target market, you’ll be increasing the amount you spend on your advertising.

It gets crazier: The data shared with the Penny Arcade Report shows that Microsoft estimates 16 million impressions for an ad during a holiday, so an ad with a $21.50 CPM would cost you a stunning $344,000 to control that spot for the day. You can also buy half-day increments. Microsoft estimates that ads during a normal weekday in the first part of the year enjoyed 9 million impressions, with 15 million impressions over the weekend. Based on these numbers, Microsoft estimates that it would cost $193,500 to control the entirety of an ad spot for your average Monday with what’s called a “road block” ad. Start layering on the features, however, and that price can begin to rise very quickly.

I contacted Microsoft and asked how much advertising revenue impacted the profitability of the Xbox 360. “We don’t share this information publicly but we can tell you that, since 2010, the advertising business has grown 142%,” I was told.

Microsoft does own aquantive, which manages all ads on xbl and the dashboard. AFAIK Sony does not own any ad company. Nor do they have any expertise in it so they would either need to buy one, or outsource it.

“If you notice the dashboard redesign added in more spots for ads than were on the blades so they have more inventory to sell,” my source explained.

Looking at the pics on the first post, you can see real estate for ads there. It's only a matter of time before they start appearing. As long as they don't affect performance, are not intrusive, and they keep the free functionality of the store and psn still free, I'm ok with it.

What about the things it actually needed?

I would add to this list the ability to place a small comment on the items, like Google Play.

I second those plus these for me:

Ability to filter search/download history by console, paid/free, game, type, etc
Ability to sort search/download history
Pre download, if you pre order AC3, you should be able to pre download it and start playing at midnight on October 30th
Pre order TV shows/Movies like you can pre order games now
Ability to buy TV series at discounted prices (as opposed to getting each individually). You can do that with games now like Walking Dead.
Rent TV shows for $.99 like on itunes
Music store to buy MP3s directly from music unlimited streaming (i.e. listen to a song you wanna purchase, just click and buy)
Remove $5 minimum on wallet (with minis, $.99 movies, $1.99 TV shows, etc, it shouldn't be necessary)
Integrate ebooks/comic store together with the other stores, making it seamless.
Move support (for TTP)

The store has a long way to go, but it's a good start.

YES BRING A SEARCH FUNCTION!!!!!!!! There are games I've bought that are no longer on the store, so I can't go and find it via the store sections.

either search function brought in, or perhaps a way to have your purchases sorted into different sections. Games, DLC, Demos, Trials, etc.

Yeah, that's all I want, too, although I could also go for fewer subsections in the What's New section.

The truth is that it looks a lot like Xbox 360's + Windows 8 Metro Dashboard.
