Default "Breaking In" Plasma TV?

Afternoon everyone.

Going to be getting my 1st plasma in a couple of months time and as usual I've been reading the various forums getting my research together. I seem to be seeing a lot about "breaking in" Plasmas for copious amounts of hours so you don't get image retention/burn?

Am I really going to have to watch films in full screen and watch programs that don't have logos in them? For 200 hours? My GF has E4/ITV2 on pretty much most evenings during the week so am I going to have to tell her that this isn't an option for a month?

While I am excited about potentially getting one, it seems a hell of a lot of effort to watch some TV and films (of which what will mostly be viewed on the TV).

Can someone clear this up once and for all (or point me in the right direction) as to what is the exact deal here. Surely I should be able to open up the TV, plug whatever I need to in and just watch what I want in any format whenever I want.....

Remember "Breaking in" a plasma WILL NOT prevent IR/Burn in.

Open the box, plug it in, take it out of torch mode and enjoy your TV. I now have 4 plasma's, never did the break in and I have gamed on them all since day one without issue.

Search the net for settings for your TV.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.

What about blu-rays? The majority are in widescreen and obviously have black bars on top/bottom? Will they be an issue as well when watching the TV?

Just mix it up for the first 100 hrs. Zoom the pic. and you should be fine.

See, this is my gripe. Am I really going to have to alternate between zooming the pic and keeping it normal?

Aging the phosphours is not a requirement by a long shot. I run slides when I get a plasma to get the hours on quick so I can calibrate, and ensure nothing is wrong with it. My last two have been aged this way:

1) Run slides continuously when sleeping or at work.

2) Set tv to mode I intend to use, then set contrast around 70. I watch whatever I want when home at night, this includes a letterbox blu-ray here and there.

Once this is done for 7 days straight, you have all the hours you need, you know the set is working properly, set the pic mode how you want it (increase contrast) and enjoy. No need to baby it. For the first 7 days, my set is never turned off.

You're only talking a week if you run the slides like Elwaylite mentioned above. It's really NOT the big of a deal, and your set will be in much better shape for calibration/picture adjustment. The slides also allow you to inspect your set for any dead or problematic pixels that will show up on some colors, but not others.

How about running the pixel feature off the Disney WOW blu ray? I think leaving that on and running for a couple of hours would be good.

K..thanks!

I notice you have the PN64D7000 which is basically the same as the 64D8000. (Unfortunately Canada doesn't carry the 7000)

So just to make sure I have this straight;

1) Take it out of torch mode
2) Keep gaming and black bars to a minimum
3) Play the slides when I'm not watching or when I'm sleeping
4) Repeat this for 7 days without turning it off
5) Day 8 - Calibrate the display and enjoy?

That's it. Id recommend movie mode and warm1 or 2. Also use film mode auto 1 on 1080i sources.

I'd actually go warm1, 2 is just too hot. Also, gamma 0 will have your around 2.2.

So already there are conflicting posts over the issue-one person says he's never done any "breaking in" and another has said he's kept his tv on for a week solid....

As I said-it seems a hell of a lot of hassle just to watch some TV.

I never did the break in period. I read somewhere (dont hold my word as gospel) with new plasma its not needed and I have never had any IR or burn in.I just use the pixel shift option and scrolling option after watching movie with bars or tv with bars. But if you want to do the break in period its up to you.
