Default Hall of Shame... Nominations for the WORST menu on BD

Earth: Power of the Planet (UK)

Hiya,

I've got the BBC Title : Earth: Power of the Planet (UK). This is my nomination for title with the worst menu system imaginable. The menu is slow, totally without any artistic merit whatsoever, and treats the viewer like a complete moron... with an annoying voice telling you that you have four options.

If you wish to be totally pi$$ed off with a Blu-ray... buy this at once... you won't be disappointed. In many ways it really spoils what could otherwise be an excellent title... just getting it to play however makes your teeth grind!!!

I'd have to say any release that doesn't have one to speak of and skips right to the movie, such as Interview With A Vampire (the release itself sucked too, poor PQ and no lossless audio).

You must be speaking of Warner titles. I actually love that they skip the menu on their discs.

Casino is the worst I've experienced. Universal didn't even bother to use music from the movie. It sounds like I'm watching an infomercial. And the scenes from the film loop in a small window in a menu, surrounded by metallic graphics that have a futuristic look (nothing at all to do with the Casino theme). How hard would it have been to develop a Vegas- or gambling-themed menu.

I think I recall Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has some of the hardest to distinguish menus. Sony has been bad at this as well, whats so hard with using light colors on dark backgrounds or dark colors on light backgrounds.

ANY WB title. You can have a movie start without going through the menu, but at least have a basic menu for people to use that contains the set up page, the scene selections, and all that jazz.

Aside from WB, Deja Vu bugged me. It's fairly laggy for some reason and I think it's the only title I've come across that's like that.

People that like plug and play prefer Warner's route, but I hate having to wait until the movie starts playing to select the audio option when I've got guests. It distracts from the experience and is designed for kids and adults that aren't technologically inclined, like my father. I'd be fine with it if they at least included the option. Instead Warner cheaply doesn't even bother.

Disney's first few batches didn't even include a dedicated menu at all, though, just pop-up. At least Warner creates menus for special features, even if they are bland. Universal's generic designs are the same as those they used for HD DVD. Personally, I feel that menu design is proportional to the effort that was put into the discs themselves. Some menus could have been better thought out or tested, but I'll take an attractive film specific HD menu where it's hard to tell what option is highlighted over a disc that doesn't even offer what DVD has since 1997, anyday.

Cars.

The initial menu isn't very clear on what selection does what.

I dislike the approach used by Warner Bros. Sure, it's nice for the disc to jump right into playing the movie (a feature common to many WB DVDs). However, the menu system on the studio's BD releases is hardly any sort of menu at all. You just get a static screen full of disorganized text. You have to hit the arrow buttons a couple times just figure out what the hell is selected in all that clutter. It's terrible. And it even seems pretty lazy and cheap.
