Gamestop Exec expects worldwide PS4 launch this fall

“We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013*, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft's final plans are. We have scenarios with one console introduction, as well as with two. Even a single launch in 2013 will drive double-digit console growth in 2014; and two launches would likely drive the console category north of 20% growth,” said Michael Hogan, executive vice president of strategy business and brand development at GameStop, during a quarterly conference call with financial analysts this week.

*GameStop’s fiscal year ends in early February, hence in case the executive mentioned fiscal year 2013 (the most likely scenario), the chances that Sony launches the PS4 globally in calendar 2013 are high since a) no new major products are launched commercially in January, b) the company already expressed expectations to boost its sales thanks to the PS4 launching in Q4 FY2013, which suggests actual availability during a high spending season.

where is the doom and gloom? To me he pointed out something that should have been obvious but that I missed. When I first read Toxa's post, I thought "where is the news, Sony already said it was coming out this year and this article did not narrow it down at all", it did not click that some people were still wondering if it would be out this year in their part of the world.

I'm going to hold back on my party poppers till Sony say it's worldwide, and THEN still hold em till they countdown the clock when i go to pick it up!

I simply have learnt not to trust them because of past launches BUT genuinely i feel they have a chance this gen with the 'off the shelf' kind of components and them having an easier manufacturing time table.

The leaked plans sort of hinted at a large amounts of units to cover a worldwide launch during the holiday period and into the new year. Fingers crossed then that it was true

It does, but like i said, with such a large scale 'normal' manufacturing for the consoles this time, there is potential for them to produce enough consoles for a worldwide launch. Japan, NA and Europe are pretty much what constitutes a worldwide launch.

Sony can get the hardware numbers i'm confident if they start production on time, but i think it was usually an issue with localisation for launch games that meant the EU launch was always delayed. This time however, they've got development times much better under control because of the easier hardware, so they shouldn't really be delaying localisation at all.

I'm as i said, optimistically hoping it releases the same time, but if it doesn't, i'm not bothered at all because PS3 has so many great exclusives coming out that we'll get a chance to finish them all before moving onto the next gen

One way or another I hope to have a PS4 sitting on my desk this year.

Ideally that'll be without extra import/early importer fees.

Not to be the doom and gloom, but they said "globally" not "in all regions", right? Technically one could interprete US and Japan as globally since it's two different continents.

I'm wondering if they have heard from Sony there is a possibility it could ship to Europe also, but not confirmed yet so they are putting it out there as a possibility but hedging a little. While I'm US I'm hoping you guys get it along with us - I'd hate to see you guys shut out and having to wait (or import).

What I found more interesting was that they are looking at two different scenarios - one with two consoles launching in 2013 and one with only Sony. To me that means either a) MS has them on a tight leash of what they can say and they had to give an "either/or" not to spoil things, b) MS hasn't told them anything difinitive at all yet, or c) they have a solid reason to believe that MS won't make 2013.

I could see it being a) and them trying to honor any NDAs or agreements they have while still giving the investors as much info as possible - but it definitely raises some eyebrows...

Hey Shin, is that something that would be made easier if someone stateside were willing to front the cash and ship it? Or when all is said and done is it just as easy to order from someone who imports or exports?

On an item like PS4s etc. it would be harder to skirt import fees if the package is opened so the best you could hope for is that by marking it as a gift and with a low enough fee, it got through unchecked.

Downside is they attempt to do you for fraud etc. Which would be PITA.

I'm gonna hold off on the purchase tbh. I'm not that eager this time or bothered to get it same time as US if there's no incentive beyond having it same time as first release.

I'd rather spend the money on some PS3 exclusives like Last of US, and then save up a bit more for the extra launch titles.

In fact, i think i'm going to buy the 'best' bundle they give if i buy at launch, then play the waiting game on price drops like i've learned to do with this gen and buy then.
