United Kingdom Clouds of Sils Maria (Olivier Assayas/Juliette Binoche)

Clouds of Sils Maria Blu-ray

STREET DATE: JULY 27. Courtesy of Artificial Eye.

Quote:
Featuring a career-defining performance by Juliette Binoche and an award-winning star turn from Kristen Stewart (Best Supporting Actress César), Clouds of Sils Maria is a gripping psychological drama and an astute exploration of the acting profession.

At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is asked to perform in a new production of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. But time has passed and she will now play a different part: a character unhealthily obsessed with a beautiful younger woman. Departing to the Swiss Alps to rehearse with her dedicated assistant (Kristen Stewart), Maria begins to see life reflecting art and finds herself drawn into an inexorable web of doubt and fear.

Expertly staged by Olivier Assayas (Carlos, Something in the Air, Summer Hours), Clouds of Sils Maria is a dazzlingly performed meditation on power, desire, loyalty and the passing of time.

Wow, it's a good thing I ordered this after all. I was going to wait for the Paramount BD, assuming that there would be one. Well, the DVD was released on July 14th, 2015...but no Blu-ray. On the other hand, almost every other major market (including the UK and Australia) is releasing this on BD. I guess there could be a Criterion BD, but it seems pointless to release a Paramount DVD if there is going to be a Criterion release.

See also: Rudderless (2014), the William H. Macy film, which is similarly, DVD-only from Paramount.

EDIT: Never mind, some searching has revealed that IFC confirmed a US BD from Criterion on Twitter:

Clouds of Sils Maria Blu-ray

Clouds of Sils Maria: adamhopelies, I passed on the message that was sent to me. Obviously, I do not know how the film was screened in the UK.

However, I would like to repeat what I wrote in our review of the French release: "there are a couple of lines in French and German (in the back), but they are not part of the main exchanges, which are in English." I know exactly what is said in French in the few lines and it is absolutely irrelevant as far as the big picture is concerned.

Furthermore, the same tiny skip that is present on the French release is also present on the UK release, which tells me that it is on the master. The film looks beautiful on Blu-ray. There is also a very good interview with Olivier Assayas in which he discusses the film and his professional relationship with Juliette Binoche. Mr. Assayas also quickly explains why he prefers to shoot in 35mm and why digital does not appeal to him.

It is a very fine release.

Is it Region B locked? The page says untested, the review says it is locked to Region B, but then in the video review portion it says "(Note: This is a Region-B "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your player regardless of your geographical location)."

I can play all regions on two of my players, but would always prefer Region A friendly releases if possible and I haven't seen anything about this being released in the US on Blu-ray.

Yes, as the review indicates, it is definitely Region-B "locked".

Thanks for the clarification.

I actually just saw the previous post linking to IFC's twitter about Criterion releasing it. So, I'm going to hold off on importing for now.

You are welcome, Nick. Yes, it looks like there will be a U.S. release

Those of us in guilds have been receiving screeners this last few weeks, and today I received the IFC package which includes Clouds Of Sils Maria. I took a look at the section at the beginning of the film that aisn't subtitled on the AE release and can confirm that they are subtitled here, so it looks like the Criterion release will also be subbed.

Amazing film but I think the Blu-ray's leave a lot to be desired.....

Lots os macroblocking in the dark scenes, for example starting at 1h12m.

The Dutch Blu-ray is especially bad in this respect as it's only a BD 25
