Default So What Does Sony REALLY Get by Winning?

Does anyone know? Do they collect revenue from every Blu-Ray disc or player sold, even if not done by their company? If this is true, is some company out there making a few cents on every DVD (or VHS if still sold) disc and player?

Just wondering - figured it had to be the case in some manner since Toshiba was willing to shell out so much to promote HD-DVD, otherwise, why would a company care in the long-run?

They hold most of the patents on the player and disk technology, as well as the mastering equipment/process (which they lost when DVD was mainstreamed--

For the exact same reason that Microsoft wants to hold on to their movie-coding patents.

I've read somewher that Panasonic had atually the most patents in Blu Ray no ?

But yeah. They get dividends (as well as many BDA founders I guess), and probably a tech. lead compared to Tosh in materirals released.

It will be a very tough next 5 years for Tosh after HD DVD goes down the drain...

I heard that Sony could get up to $10 billion in licensing fees. I don't now how true the article I got that info from is though.

Respect, sticking with a format that ends up winning out. Maybe people would stop bringing up the whole VSH/Beta crap.

I thought Toshiba gets royalties from every DVD and DVD player sold because they pioneered the technology. Is that true?

I read that as well. Wikipedia says the DVD format was developed by Toshiba.

sony will get money/royalties for all blu-ray discs sold. however, panasonic hold more blu-ray patenets, so they do get more than sony would. while many ppl think blu-ray is like 90% made up by sony, they are completely wrong. heres the catch dvd was made by toshiba, so by staling consumers with this format war, they actually are winning, because they keep consumers using dvd whitch they get royalites from. with toshiba, if they stall they win, if they win they win, they only way they can lose is by conceeding, and with being a bigger company in terms of market capatilization than ms they won't be any time soon.

That is indeed the case. When it comes to winners, if there should be one, and winning the lion's share after the war then nobody comes even close to Panasonic. They are the true giant here with most patents.

To put it bluntly: there is absolutely no comparison between the two. Even with SONY's film offshoot SPHE Panasonic are still on top.

One of my favorite quotes ever!

Toshiba stands to lose a ton if Blu-ray wins, and Sony will make big on royalties for Blu-ray, though Panasonic, Phillips, and others would share in this.
