Default Morgan Creek Selling Off Film Library

Might be worth keeping a tab on this, as it could put the WB/Morgan Creek titles out of print for a time while they move onto another studio or label -- similar to the Regency/WB dealings from this past summer (unless Warner actually buys the library themsevles):

Quote:
Morgan Creek has identified several potential bidders as the company behind “Robin Hood: Prince of Theives” and “The Last of the Mohicans” prepares to sell domestic rights to its film library.

Studios, mini-majors, and private equity firms have all expressed interest, although no one has formally bid and a timeline for a possible sale has yet to be established.

“It’s early in the process,” said Greg Mielcarz, executive VP of marketing and publicity at Morgan Creek. “There are no frontrunners at the moment.”

The company is offering up rights to 65 of its films and has tapped Houlihan Lokey to serve as its investment banker. There are certain films that the company will retain remake or television rights to, among them “The Exorcist,” “Ace Ventura,” “Major League” and “Clive Barker’s Nightbreed.”

Private equity firms are interested? Somebody alert Lionsgate. Another film library to do absolutely nothing with to add to their portfolio.

Does this mean we may actually get theatrical versions of these films on blu-ray finally?

Not for “The Last of the Mohicans”, James G Robinson was the executive for this, but Fox put all the money for it and the film it self is not under the Morgan Creek catalog its Fox property.

I'm not sure Fox put up all the money because MC controlled the international rights. Though them, Warner put out the theatrical cut on DVD in Europe at one time, which was the last place you could see it.

Maybe Criterion can get Dead Ringers again.
Maybe we can finally get William Peter Blatty's cut of Exorcist III, or, rather, Legion. Call up Shout Factory. There's some good horror at play. Plus, they've dealt with Morgan Creek before on Nightbreed.

Bad news, indeed. The last thing we need is unnecessary remakes.

So Warner is losing more of their property? Nice.

EDIT: Let me rephrase that. Does this mean Morgan Creek co-productions with various studios like Warner, Paramount, and Universal, are going to go to a different company?

Morgan Creek already kind of tried a remake with Exorcist: The Beginning (after they hated the much-superior Dominion for being too different and ordered the whole movie reshot) and it didn't work out at all. At this point, a new Exorcist is more likely to appear on the small screen. Maybe a Fathers Merrin and Karras series in the vein of Hannibal or Bates Motel?

Well, yes. It's worth keeping in mind here when you say Warner is losing their 'property' that Warner doesn't own these movies. They're simply acting as a distributor (just as Fox did before them with NIGHTBREED, EXORCIST III, etc).

Also, Morgan Creek didn't 'co-produce' most of their films. They financed nearly all of them on their own and studios like Warner and Fox just handled the distribution (LAST OF THE MOHICANS was one of the exceptions as Fox owns that one outright; the first MAJOR LEAGUE was also a co-production with Paramount and they own the rights to the original...but there aren't a lot of those scenarios in the Morgan Creek catalog).

AFAIK this is not a situation like Regency's library where Warner co-produced a handful of films (like most of the Grisham pictures) and WB gets to hang onto those. Most of these pictures are Morgan Creek's to do with whatever they want, and I believe that includes their bigger hits like ROBIN HOOD PRINCE OF THIEVES, ACE VENTURA, etc. So there is some value I would imagine with the package -- though not as much as if the remake rights to do more EXORCISTs was included.

Is there a list somewhere of titles that could be affected by this deal. I'd love a heads up on what could be affected so I can start purchasing titles now rather than waiting until it's too late and trying to play catch up.

Looks like I better grab my Ace Ventura Films while I can. I think Wal-mart had the double feature for $10 at one point... hopefully that's still the case and I can pick it up on my next visit. Thanks for the link guys.
