They are rugged pioneers and brave trailblazers who tame the wild west. These are the women of the great frontier – that’s right – the women! Based on historical records, this wagon-train saga details a 2,000-mile journey from Chicago to California. The men seek gold; the women seek matrimony. Both strike pay dirt! Buck Wyatt (Robert Taylor) is a tough, experienced scout who leads a wagon train comprised of two ex-showgirls (Denise Darcel and Julie Bishop), a hearty widow (Beverly Dennis) and fifteen men who function as guides. When one of the men disobeys Buck’s orders not to fraternize with the ladies, Buck shoots him, causing the others to desert. Instead of turning back, the determined women insist on going on, learning to ride, shoot, and drive mules. Although treacherous terrain and a deadly ambush lay ahead, these tough ladies are filled with the American frontier spirit, and nothing will stop them! Based on an original story by Frank Capra, and directed by signature gusto by the masterful William Wellman, Westward the Women is a cinematic masterpiece!

I'll have to upgrade from my DVD for this. I really like Wellman Westerns – particularly this, Yellow Sky and Track of the Cat.

I had never seen this and after I picked it up the description on the back was enough to make me pop it in. Holy Moly was this good. It quickly became a top ten western for me.

Received my copy today and have already watched it.

My first viewing in about 30 years and this film still sparkles. It is so fresh and alive with an all round great cast. Beautiful print from Warners.

One of my few disappointments with WAC titles have been what I consider lack-luster set of supplements. Nice to see this release does not fall into that category.

This was one of the few Warner Archive DVDs to have a new supplement created for it back in 2012 (the audio commentary), with its theatrical trailer and the vintage featurette being easy enough pack-in bonuses. This Blu-ray adds in the public domain Lux Radio broadcast and, even better, the two remastered Tom and Jerry shorts (one of which was already slated for WB's cancelled 2013 "Golden Collection, Volume 2" set).

Sadly, the small scale of their operation (especially these days) leaves almost no time/money for new supplements, which makes any extra features a cause for celebration.
