Default Am I the only one noticing a weird trend with threequels?

This probably dosen't deserve it's own thread. But am I the only noticing a weird trend with threequels? Last year when The Dark Knight Rises came out, there was a bit of a divided opinion-Some loved it and some didn't like it. And the same things seems to be happening with Iron Man 3- they loved it or they didn't love it it seems. It's kinda weird.

But Matrix 3 & Shrek 3 were at least better than the #2's. So that doesnt really support the thread's theory.
Plus T3 was just fine.

Tis the nature of sequels: they disappoint.

No...not at all.

Arnold putting on Elton John glasses and then telling someone to talk to the hand is not fine.

Getting Nick Stahl to play John Conner instead of Edward Furlong (who may have been going through drugs or personal issues at the time) is not fine.

Saying Judgement Day was stopped only for it to happen again is not fine.

The whole screenplay in total was not fine.

And Claire Daines was definitely "not fine".

I'm talking about a weird trend thats been rising the past 2 years. Not the 2000's. Of course those threequels sucked but it seems that TDKR sort've broke the third movie curse (Return of the King was the movie that really broke the third movie curse) Now not everyone hates threequels that have came out in the past 2 years, only some people .

I agree with everything here except Army Of Darkness. You should feel ashamed of yourself.

It's a film I've always wanted to like (I've seen it twice), but it just can't match the heights of Evil Dead 2 for me.

Hmmm does two examples make it a trend? We will need more empirical evidence to support your claim.

Okay. But don't you find it weird that the past 2 threequels that have came out in the past 2 years have dividing opinions? I'm not saying this "trend" will continue, but its a weird coincidence.

Well, if you're ONLY talking about IM3 and TDKR, that's certainly in the margin-of-error territory of "Unrealistic fan expectations".
(And what, IM3 is out, already? Geez, you sleep late on weekends, and look what happens.)

As for Pirates, Spidey, Shrek and Matrix 3's, those are mostly the fault of studios getting so trilogy-happy, they try to "up the ante" on the big event #2 by loading the plot so far down with enough overstuffing to "cliffhanger" two presold sequels, they lose the simple charm that made the first movie seem so essential.
And yes, Alien 3 was a last-ditch patch of jury-rigging, and Terminator 3 was a big fat fanboy-written fraud.

Whilst I don't think it stands up against the first two, it's still miles better than Salvation and I'm proud to say I have 3 in my collection.

I think the only real problem was that it went over the same ground that T2 covered, only 2 did it better. Kristanna Loken could have had a bigger role as the T-X though.
