I prefer to buy separately if it's economically feasible to do so, and if separate versions are available. I will buy a collection only if I want to own all of the films included in the collection, and only if no other economically practical alternative is available at the time.
I bought Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection because I was genuinely interested in owning every single film in the box set, and because the films were not available in stand-alone editions. I bought Universal Monsters: The Essential Collection for the same reason. I do not like dead weight in my collection, though, so I generally steer clear of collections that include films I do not want to own. The Superman Motion Picture Anthology is one such box set that I have avoided, simply because I have no desire to own Superman Returns. |

Pretty much this. If it's an ongoing series, then I'll buy them one at a time. Although, there are rare times where I have no interest in the other entries in the series (Anything beyond the original The Matrix, for example).

I prefer collections, if I like all the movies in a collection. Especially if it's multiple movies in one case, like the Dirty Harry Collection exclusive at Best Buy.
If I don't like each of the movies in a series/collection, I prefer to pick and choose. I'm not a completist at all. I love rejecting something that isn't as good as the rest. |

When it's a complete collection I always try to buy the box sets. I prefer the clean look of the collections, plus more often then not they have extra content exclusive to them. With that said, I prefer my box sets to have individual cases for each movie, so in a way, I'm getting the best of both worlds anyways. To date I own...
-The Alien Anthology -Back to the Future Trilogy -The Batman Anthology -The Ultimate Bourne Collection -The Original Christmas Classics -Chucky The Complete Collection (Coming soon) -Home Alone Collection -Jurassic Park Collection -The Lord of the Rings Collection -The Matrix Collection -Mission Impossible Collection -Nightmare on Elm Street Collection -Oceans Collection -The Omen collection -Puppet Master Collection vol. 1 -Rambo collection -[Rec] Collection -Robocop Trilogy -Rocky Collection -Santa Clause Collection -Shrek Collection -Spiderman Trilogy -Star Wars the Complete Collection -Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Collection -X-Men Trilogy |

Usually whichever comes first, or if I have held out on the individual releases and a collection is later unveiled with new features, I consider myself lucky and go for that version. Basically, I go for what I perceive is the best version available.
Unfortunately, you can't win them all. For example, I have the first three Friday the 13th movies and want the fourth, but I don't particularly want to double dip with the box set. I may just have to live with the DVD version of the fourth that I got with the 1-8 box from back in the day (with Best Buy exclusive bonus disc). |

I buy collections when they're cheap and will likely special editions for a movie I'm a big fan of in the collection like the matrix digibook (I still need to get that).
