Reading through these forums Ive noticed alot of people asking Sony or the BDA to bring in an entry level Blu Player to compete with the cheap HD-DVD players coming this quarter. It occured to me, how about a BluStation??
Its pretty much a PlayStation but all the game playability deleted. I figure Sony would save some money if they took out the gaming section, replace the PS3 controller with a BD remote(has to be less expensive to make than the PS3 remote) took out the Wi-FI(it will still have an ethernet port) and maybe take out the HD and just leave 5 or 1 GB for something useful. Delete the extra USB ports(dont know if this would reduce costs) and they could use the same case as the PS3 to save on production. Just leave us with a very well built Blu Player(1080P of course). Wouldnt this cut costs. Im sure it would bring the Price down to about 299USD maybe even to 250. Now that would kill that POS Tosh. is making. I dont know, maybe im just trying to come up with any dumb idea. But this would definetaly make me wanna buy a third BD player! And before people start to say its a bad idea, Im new here so go easy on me Long Live The Blu!! |

It's creative thinking but I think the problem will take care of itself by the end of the year or January '08. With the introduction of 1.1 compliant standalones (and the PS3 upgrade), the 1.0 players out there now will have be discounted some. I bet the S300, for example, will be down to $325 somewhere between Black Friday and Christmas

While it's a novel idea, I think the cost of doing that Vs. using dedicated chips that have reference designs for players is going to be cheaper to produce.
I don't think Sony would be able to save enough by cutting the RSX and a couple USB ports to make it worthwile (not to mention the motherboard redesign and a new set of firmware). I'd love the XMB as many places as possible (I want it on my S500i phone!)... it's pretty and simple. |

Then you take out all the hardware it doesn't need to play Blu-rays, you're down to around $600 if you're lucky. |

You can't strip down the PS3 to just play Blu-rays. but without game licensing you don't have any way to make money so you're right back up to that $499 SRP that the Sharp and a few other decks are below.
Current build cost is somewhere in the $475 range. You rip out the wifi, the bluetooth, the hard drive and the card reader, that's maybe $100. So you're still talking $499 SRP at standard profit margins. It's not worth their time. |

Just as I thought. Well didnt hurt to ask. I just hope we keep winning this war.
And although yall say its not a good idea, if doable, it would be a huge blow to HDDVD |

The PS3 is already sold under cost, a move done to compete with other gaming system competitors. They recoup some of those losses with accesory and game sales. A typical blu-ray player doesn't have much accesories to recoup such a slashed price.
