Default What quirks annoy you the most about certain Blu-ray movies?

Which of these quirks on certain Blu-ray's annoy you the most? Edge enhancement (haloing), aliasing, digital noise reduction, overdone or underdone contrast, incorrect color timing, using inferior video compression codecs in 2012 (VC-1, MPEG-2), video presentation in a non-theatrical aspect ratio (1.78:1 presentation for 2.39:1 movie), using lossy audio codecs (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.), audio presentation not being in it's original setup (7.1 setup for a movie that was originally only mono, stereo or 5.1), or using 25 GB discs in 2012? Explain why they annoy you, if you want to vent your frustration.

Wrong aspect ratios!

I can live with inferior sound/picture quality, but can't forgive anything but original aspect ratio.

For this reason alone, I chose to import Equilibirum at about 5 times the cost of the US blu ray.

my biggest peeve w/ BDs is not being able to stop a movie & start it up at the same place later. seems like it would be such a simple thing to do...

Some discs have that feature, especially recent Disney and 20th Century Fox releases.

I think it's mostly the DNR, and anything else that keeps older movies from looking as natural as can be on blu-ray.

And, occasionally, movies that take forever to load.

a lot

1. Digital noise reduction + aliasing
2. Use of VC-1/MPEG-2 video codecs in 2012 + Using 25 GB discs in 2012.

15GB with HD-DVD was irrelevant for true HD experience and now 25 or 30GB is limit and start to become irrelevant

DNR is always an ugly thing. Not that it really hampers my enjoyment of the film; as long as it looks sharp, I'll still be impressed by most pictures. But even before I knew what DNR was, I remember popping in "The Longest Day" and wondering what the frakk was wrong with everone's faces. That being said, all the DNR people complain about in the first two "Star Wars" movies don't bother me one bit. For me, it all depends on how much DNR is used; too much looks too gaudy.

Aliasing tends to bother me if it's extreme ("Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" comes to mind).

Incorrect OAR has always bothered me. I can put up with certain features being incorrect (like my UK copy of "Equilibrium," which looks awesome when it fills up the whole screen), but it'll bother me thinking that there's more of the image to see.

Lossy audio just doesn't have the same kick as full HD sound.

I'm not savvy enough to care about specific video codecs, but it may bother me to see single-layer discs being used in this day and age. I understand that high-def movies only use a certain amount of space, but wouldn't it be nice to let the film breathe and have a high bitrate?

This. As well as the unskippable FBI and other warnings on some discs. Most you can skip, but on that rare chance you can't? Nothing but fury from me.

I can't STAAAAAAAAAAAND when you want to pause the movie to see a detail and they keep the pop up menu there.

I want to see the still picture. I don't need to be guided through the menus and I certainly don't need to be reminded that the image is paused.

Certain discs have ruined slow motion for me.

Don't even get me started on the lack of A>B Repeat.

Had to vote for them all.

I am very annoyed by smeary DNR, hot contrast, resulting in blown-out whites, weak black levels, lossy audio tracks, when it says HD picture/HD sound!!!!!, anything other than the OAR, aliasing, macroblocking (VC-1- I am looking at you), Banding is very annoying too, and so on.

If a movie looks perfect on a 25GB disc, then I don't care, but usually you can expect problems.

Most of the things on your list are truly just errors, which obviously need to be avoided. The one true pet peeve I have is the failure to include the original soundtrack, in lossless audio. When a movie isn't presented in its OAR, there's a lot of complaining that's justifiable. When the original mix is there, it's usually "a pity, but no dealbreaker", while the person goes off and watches a fifty year old movie in 7.1 lossless audio. After so many DVD and Blu-ray releases where a new mix was marred by many errors, why isn't this a bigger priority? Apart from (and I hope I'm underestimating most folks here) wanting their speakers filled with audio, I really cannot see another reason for this.

I'am sick and tired of the European releases having better picture and audio quality than the U.S. versions.

Every blu-ray release should have the following:

1. Best picture quality available.
2. 7.1 lossless audio
3. Theatrical cut and Directors cut (if available)
4. No censorship (no editing)
5. Trailers at the end of the movie instead of the beginning.

Trailers for movies, i dont mind some but some of these movies have soo many. For example, the Back to the Future movies.... you end up watching that Universal logo thing like 4 times before the movie starts~!

Default Need some help...

With the terminology used in the poll. Does anyone know of a site that would explain each of them and maybe examples?

I understand some but not all.

Thanks!

The trick to bypass this, and this is for most other movies as well, is this:

Instead of selecting "Play" on the main menu, select "Chapters", and select "Chapter 1". Skips all the superfluous stuff and just jumps right into the movie. This is especially helpful to remember when watching "No Country for Old Men", or else, if you select "Play", they make you watch this lovely PSA:

It creeps me out. Good thing I don't smoke or chew tobacco.

different distributor, different Quality/content that's the way it is

OP should add in the poll "HD-DVD port"
