Default Help With Categorizing Movie Genre

I don't know if this belongs in this Blu-ray area or Movies area I also searched and could have sworn that I saw one just like this. It might not be a good sign that I couldn't find it again. So...here we go. I need professional answers (outside of my own professional answers of course). I was using my Movie Collection software and I like to narrow movies down to ONE genre. Here is a list of movies I am torn between regarding genres and would like to know your opinions.

Cloverfield
Collateral
Daybreakers
Fight Club
Footloose (Comedy or Musical?)
Hunger Games
I am Legend
Matrix Trilogy
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Paris, Je t'aime
Pitch Black
Planet Terror
The Prestige
The Relic
Resident Evil
Sherlock Holmes
Swordfish

This is it! Thanks in advance!

One tip is to go to the database page here and click on the collections link. That will show you how others have categorized it. The db page also has a "movie appeal" which shows the percentages of each drama that the movie belongs to (it's not always accurate though).

I would probably categorize it as follows:

Cloverfield - Sci-Fi
Collateral - Thriller
Daybreakers -Horror
Fight Club - Drama, though I have it in a "Crime/Thriller" category
Footloose (Comedy or Musical?) - never seen it
Hunger Games - Action/Adventure
I am Legend - Sci-Fi
Matrix Trilogy - Sci-Fi
Mr. and Mrs. Smith - Action
Paris, Je t'aime - Drama
Pitch Black - Sci-Fi
Planet Terror - Horror
The Prestige - Drama
The Relic - Horror
Resident Evil - Action
Sherlock Holmes - Action/Adventure
Swordfish - Action

Definelty go with this advice. I mostly agree with the way they're categorized in the movie appeal box/section.

I don't know if you can change your title, but the correct spelling is:

Categorizing instead of catagorizing.

I never looked at Footloose as a comedy. Sure, it has some comical parts, but overall, this is a drama. I couldn't call it a musical, because musicals have actors breaking into song and the music helps to tell the story.

Footloose has a strong musical soundtrack, but it's not a musical either.

I placed mine in drama.

I always thought it was awfully light hearted for Drama.

Maybe a category of DRAMADY would be fitting.

Since I have my collection separated into genres as well, I'm always running into this problem of which genre to place a disc in (like if The Paperboy gets placed in comedy or thriller/horror..that kind of thing)

+1. I always try to figure out the most important genre for the purpose of picking up something to watch of a particular genre that suit my mood. Some genres witch I have many films wit same director or actor, I have made to a own category, for example Hitchcock films.

I do not bother separating my collection into genres on this website. Overall alphabetical order is the only way that I can keep sane looking at it.

I sort them by genre here, but I am more picky about having the genres right at the link listed in my signature since that is out for everyone to see. On my shelves I sort them alphabetically. That is what keeps me sane.

I'll use this. My wife is still fighting me on The Prestige. She disagrees with Drama, but doesn't know where else it fits.

Like you said, if characters don't randomly break into song like no sane real person ever would, it's not a musical. Even Pink Floyd's The Wall is under "music" and not "musical" on dvdprofiler.
