still wifi b/g only, no N.

Label Position is different from 3000/slim models, new case?

4000

3000

original fat model

Might be the super slim that has been rumored. Kinda disappointed about no wireless n though. Everything nowadays has it.

This!..And why does Sony not make PS3's with custom art work of the game that it's bundled with like MS does?

If it's close to the size of the slim PS2, I'm interested. If it's just slightly smaller than the current slim PS3 than I couldn't care less.

Japan gets custom ps3's. And,we here in the states just get bundles with a standard ps3.

Other sites are speculating they may drop the optical drive or the hard drive on this model.

Both speculations are laughable imo.

On one side, the machine would be limited to the PSN offering (even with a few Full games, it is nowhere up to where it would need to be to make a machine live on it), and on the other hand, with no HDD, you'd have a PS3 that couldn't run some of the most iconic games developed for it, starting with MGS4.

I expect a streamlined machine, probably at $199, to give MS a fight during the Holidays and to boost the sales before or during the announcement of the PS4 (between TGS and the next E3 imo)

You could combine what were multiple chips onto the same die, perhaps? That would cut down on motherboard space...

I was thinking about this some more and I'm still baffled by the lack of wireless n. Not too surprising considering they released the go without wireless g, but still. I wouldn't be surprised if they still only have 2 USB slots on the case.

Maybe they can reintroduce the PS2 chip since that's finally dead.

They've clearly got some backwards compatibility working with entirely software emulation, as proven by the PS2 classics on PSN. They'd rather not admit that the technology exists to play your old discs.

^^ This.

There is no way that in 2012 they would release a PS3 without a HDD.

It sounds like it could be a super slim.

price wouldn't go up. but the storage would go down. is knocking the storage down to 64gb worth the extra speed and lower power consumption? my guess is no

I doubt they would do it, but if they released a super-slim version with no optical drive at the right price (100-150), I would totally buy it as a second ps3. 90% of the games I own are digital anyway and it would be a great alternative to getting an Apple TV or Rouku for Netflix on my other TV.

Also, with their purchase of Gaikai, a model with no optical drive or hard drive could be for streaming only. It would be pretty radical, but definitely possible.

Not so; Those PS2 classics are actually PS3 games. PS1 classics are emulated (as are PS1 discs when played on PS3), but the PS2 Classics on the store are ports.

I've been hoping for a super slim for some time now. One that uses less power and is lighter and easier to take places.

Fiercely doubt they'd make one with no optical or hard drive. It'd be crippled without them.

A return of the PS2 chips? Could be cool with PS2s out of production. By now the PS3 and PS2 chips should be about as small as they're going to get.

Thing is a PS3 without an optical drive would be a major flop. Take the PSP Go for example. It just goes to show that digital distribution isn't going to be as popular as traditional gaming any time soon.

I would be tempted by a new slim that was quieter though, but I would most likely keep my 120GB slim.
