On one side, the machine would be limited to the PSN offering (even with a few Full games, it is nowhere up to where it would need to be to make a machine live on it), and on the other hand, with no HDD, you'd have a PS3 that couldn't run some of the most iconic games developed for it, starting with MGS4. ![]() I expect a streamlined machine, probably at $199, to give MS a fight during the Holidays and to boost the sales before or during the announcement of the PS4 (between TGS and the next E3 imo) |

They've clearly got some backwards compatibility working with entirely software emulation, as proven by the PS2 classics on PSN. They'd rather not admit that the technology exists to play your old discs.

There is no way that in 2012 they would release a PS3 without a HDD. It sounds like it could be a super slim. |

price wouldn't go up. but the storage would go down. is knocking the storage down to 64gb worth the extra speed and lower power consumption? my guess is no

I doubt they would do it, but if they released a super-slim version with no optical drive at the right price (100-150), I would totally buy it as a second ps3. 90% of the games I own are digital anyway and it would be a great alternative to getting an Apple TV or Rouku for Netflix on my other TV.
Also, with their purchase of Gaikai, a model with no optical drive or hard drive could be for streaming only. It would be pretty radical, but definitely possible. Last edited by Uber12; 07-06-2012 at 02:09 PM. |

I've been hoping for a super slim for some time now. One that uses less power and is lighter and easier to take places. Fiercely doubt they'd make one with no optical or hard drive. It'd be crippled without them. A return of the PS2 chips? Could be cool with PS2s out of production. By now the PS3 and PS2 chips should be about as small as they're going to get. I would be tempted by a new slim that was quieter though, but I would most likely keep my 120GB slim. |
